Hi, my husband has been looking at a position at amazon.com which has a distribution center in lexington,ky. If anyone knows where this center is located and the closest places to live that would be very helpful. Also, I have 3 kids, 1 in high school,1 in elementary and the other headed to elementary school. Any info on schools would be great. My son is a quarterback at his high school here in Fl. So football will also be a factor in our decision. I also would like to know if smoking in restaurants is allowed their. My son is very allergic and here we have no more smoking in any restaurants. Lastly, we love snow and I would like to know about how much snow you get in these areas. We lived for a year in Youngstown, OH and I loved the snow. So any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

There is no smoking in any public place in Lexington. It only rarely snows - maybe once or twice in the winter season. Ice storms are more common than snow. I'm not sure about the schools - we live in Shelby Co. (about an hour away..)

In Lexington,KY Tates Creek and Paul Lawrence Dunbar high schools have noted football programs. There is *NO* smoking allowed in public places in Lexington. Lex does have the highest property tax rates in the state, plus they have this $360/year 'educational tax' as well. The crime rate seems to be going up, I work in an area called Beaumont Centre which has $600k homes and there have been numerous home-invasion robberies, carjackings, car thefts, and the ever-popular gas station holdups in the 3 years I've worked in the city (I live in Anderson County, 30 minutes west of Lex, which is rural and redneck). Lexington does have a lot of good points, there are good restaurants, arts/cultural events, the KY Horse Park, I drive past world-famous Calumet Farms every day on the way into work, and some of the backroads you can see these million-dollar race horses up close and personal standing at the fences. Driving in Lex is frustrating, hard to get around compared to Louisville where I'm from originally....all the traffic lights are out of sync. But just my .02c worth as someone who just works in the city and doesn't live there.... KY Mike.

Agreed!!! I'm going to start bringing a newspaper in the car with me to read while stuck at these 5 minute red lights.

Amazon is a mile from where I live. It is off Leestown Road in Lexington. Marehaven and Masterson Station subdivisions are both close. There is also an older neighborhood (meadowthorpe). I know that Masterson Station and Marehaven feed into Meadowthorpe Elementary (I've heard good things), Leestown Middle, and Bryan Station High School. Bryan Station's football team is improving and the basketball team was #2 in the state this year. The coach was awarded Coach of the Year. I've been a teacher there for 8 years. Certain people will start slamming Bryan Station on this site. If you move to its district, I recommend you check it out before listening to the naysayers. The school is a brand new facility and the teachers are top-notch (if I do say so myself

The closest neighborhoods to Amazon are off Leestown Road, but the problem there is that the high school is Bryan Station, which (please nobody flame me here) is 5th out of 5 public high schools in Lexington. I think that there is no disputing this point.
If you can find a place where your son can attend Dunbar High School, that is where you want to be. An alternative solution might be to go over the county line into Woodford County. Lafayette is a good high school for the arts, and living in its district would be reasonable given your husband's job at Amazon; however, their football team is not all that great. Tates Creek is not a good commute for your husband. With all that said, NOTHING in Lexington is all THAT far away from each other. But if I were you, I'd definitely go for the Dunbar plan. What is your housing budget? |

Well, I wouldn't put a dog in Fayette Co Public Schools.... PM me for specifics
I'd highly recommend Woodford Co or West Jessamine school districts - they don't have all the cliques and economic disparities you'd find in Lexington. |

Every school has cliques. But I agree that Woodford County has a great history of solid good schools and is a beautiful place to live.

I have raised two children (not dogs) who went through the Fayette County Public Schools and have wonderful feelings, opinions, and memories involved. Would give them a thumbs up in a minute! Oh, I'm also a product of Fayette County Public Schools. |
