I've been trolling the board for a few weeks now and there just seem to be so many knowledgeable people here to help -- I hope someone can give me some insight into the area surrounding Lexington.
We'll be making a move this summer, with jobs in Lexington. Right now we live in a very urban place, and we'd like more room for the kids to run around. Things I'm wondering about: Quality of the public school districts in Fayette, Jessamine and Woodford counties. Are others nearby that we should consider? I am an educator (not teaching right now), but I'm not into the whole competitive school thing. I care more about schools where student-teacher ratio is good/decent and the community cares about its schools. Do the school districts have quality after-school programs if we need them? What about Kindergarten ... half-day or full-day? Are there particular neighborhoods, areas or towns that you endorse as "great places to live" for one reason or another? What are the traffic patterns like in and around Fayette County? In two weeks we make our first fact-finding tour! Thank you. |

Hey - May is the perfect time!! DERBY!!!!!!!!!
You have to come to Louisville the first Saturday in May - even if you don't want to go into Churchill Downs - just feeling that feeling is truly amazing. I really do cry when they play 'My Old Kentucky Home'. There truly is no state like ours. So glad you are on the way!! Kimmiey |

The only reason I cry when they play that annoying old Foster tune, is that I despise its racist content. If you really want to live in Lex, You'll have no trouble finding good accommodations, since the population is about 270,000 and quickly growing. I am on my way outta' here, but only for reasons related to my professional advancement. Two fantastic universities, considerable racial diversity, and a Toyota-borne economy, make Lexington an ideal home for many. Good luck to you and yours!

Wow. Did you know it was an abolitionist song? It's about a slave being sold down river. "Weep no more my lady." The "narrator" is being separated from his family. It's a protest song ... granted, written by a white guy, but it was what he could do and so he wrote it. Probably many Kentuckians don't even realize it, but 'tis true. |

Thanks for the input. We've heard a lot from people about schools by now. It seems there are many good options. Looking forward to getting moved!

Yeah, that line about darkies really chokes me up. What an ugly, racist old jibe! We can do much better than this crap, for a state song.
