Angry Schools in Lexington

My 13 year old daughter was just finally diagnosed with Autism yesyerday and we know how hard it is being a kid these days and now to add that on. I need to find out some information on the best middle schools for her to be in and her not to slip through the cracks. She'll be going to Leestown Middle. Does anyone know anything about the way they treat the special needs kids. Please help me. I'm so worried and afraid to send her to school. Is there any schools out there in Lexington that only deals with special needs kids? Thanks for your time.

Default Schools

Here is a couple of links for school information and ratings that may help.

GreatSchools.net

Schooldigger.com -- Search and compare elementary, middle, and high schools.

Hope they help and good luck!

I know 2 of the special education teachers at Tates Creek Middle School. They are great teachers, but I don't think you would want her there! You may want to call Central Office to see what options the school sysyem has for your daughter..........Good Luck!

I've walked down the halls of Leestown Middle a few times (academic team competitions and athletic events) and frankly it scared me more than anything. Very outdated facilities especially. Please check with the county school board to find out which school will best suit your needs! I cannot stress this enough. I definitely would steer away from Leestown, despite it being a magnet school. If you're dead set on public middle schools within Fayette County, I'd look into Beaumont and Morton.

Is homeschooling an option? There are a couple of really great high school co-ops here in Lexington.

There is a thread that was started last November that is relevant ("Best Schools for Autism in Lexington"). Click on "Search" above, then enter "autism" as your key word and search only the Lexington forum.

As a special ed teacher at Bryan Station High, I saw the IEPs that came out of Leestown and had meetings at the school. I didn't see anything amiss in their special ed program. My neighbor whose child was at Leestown had problems with regular ed teachers, but I haven't heard anything negative about special ed. As long as you are a proactive parent, I think she'll be fine. If she's slated for Bryan Station High next year, don't let anyone's negativity make you nervous--Bryan Station has the biggest and best special ed program in the county and central office will tell you that.

How 'bout Beaumont Middle School? Our son has Asperger's and will start there Monday. Honestly, our dealings with the school so far have not been encouraging.
