Default Is Georgetown a pretty safe town?

I will be visiting Georgetown next week and staying at a motel there. Is it a pretty safe little community. Any areas to stay away from. Where are most of the antique stores? Where is a good Mexican Food restaurant?

I'm not a Georgetown expert, but from my numerous experiences there, I've never once felt unsafe. It's a small town, but the Toyota plant there really helps the economy and provides numerous jobs. The only Mexican restaurant I know of is on US 25 south of downtown. I can't remember the name, but it's in a little strip mall not too far from the Kroger. Most antique shopping can be found downtown. I have to ask also: is Fava's restaurant still there?

For the most part it is a very safe town. Most of the big-name hotels (like the Hilton Garden Inn, etc) are located in the same corridor right off of I-75 at Cherry Blossom Way/Hwy 620, and are near many of the local dining options (most typical fast food plus some chain eateries like Cracker Barrel, Ruby Tuesday, O'Charley's, etc). Mi Mexico is located right there off of I-75 and Cherry Blossom across from Wal-mart, and it is a pretty decent and locally popular Mexican restaurant. Some of the older hotels like the Motel 6 and Days Inn are at another exit north and are mostly surrounded by truck stops, but are within 5 minutes of the other areas of Georgetown. Cherry Blossom/Hwy 620 actually loops around the Toyota plant and interchanges with both areas at I-75.

The antique stores are located downtown, which is actually a quaint little restored Main St. It isn't far from the hotels to downtown. Just take Cherry Blossom/Hwy 620 west from the interstate to the Paris Pike intersection (there's a K-mart, and a Wendy's I think). Turn right and follow the road as it veers to the right, and it will take you to Main St. Before Main St, across from the K-mart on your right, you will pass another Mexican restaurant, Camino Grande, which some of the locals love but personally I didn't enjoy as much.

There are some sketchy areas of Georgetown, but as long as you're not driving through random neighborhoods at night I think you'll be fine. I'd certainly feel safe walking down Main St, parking at night at most of the local hotels, etc.

And yes - Fava's is still there if you're looking for an historic mom-and-pop diner kind of place while shopping downtown - it is right near some of the antique shops.

If you go to Fava's you must have a milkshake! They have the best I've ever had.

Hmmm, what streets would you consider sketchy there?

The biggest problems with crime levels in Georgetown are primarily property crimes and those are usually directly related to the neighborhoods with higher pockets of drug use and issues. Violent crimes are fortunately pretty rare and tend to be focused on domestic cases and (more recently) robberies at gas stations at the interstate.

If you aren't within those pockets of areas that are sketchier, (and you will likely know it when you are) you are much less likely to experience any of the problems. Natalie Payne is an officer at the Georgetown Police Dept and she is a great resource to answer any questions you have about specific neighborhoods, etc. She coordinates many of the neighborhood watch and drug reduction programs, and also releases community bulletins about crime issues that come up.

Georgetown is a pretty safe town, overall. Just be leary of areas along the E. Main St. extension from downtown to the 460 bypass. Not that it's slummy, per se, but there are pockets of white trash/trailer park/poor ghetto.

It is a town with unmitigated, trashy suburban sprawl, however, as opposed to better-controlled or more "upscale" suburbia. (That, plus the people I've met from G'town, make it one of probably my eight least favorite towns in the entire state!) I would not be surprised to see more of those areas (especially on the east side) become more infested with meth dealers and armed robbers over the next 10-15 years.

I seek to impress. Okay, seriously, Georgetown does have its nice parts, mostly along Frankfort Road, Paris Pike, immediately downtown; the city's southside is a very nice, clean, safe working-class community.

Georgetown will never have "high" crime and "slums" by standards of anywhere in the U.S.; however, for a small town, I greatly predict that G'town will have a "high" crime rate in 20 years. (Make sense?) 27,000 people live there and I'm sure many like it, but I just know I never have.
