Default Is this your typical winter in Lexington & surrounding?

I have been reading the Herald-Leader everyday and am surprised by how cold and how snowy KY has been this winter. From all the weather data I have read, I thought you only got an occasional dusting of snow and a bad ice storm or two. And the temperatures have been as frigid some days as it is in Massachusetts. Is this your typical winter?

Also, when does spring typically begin? In New England some years we skip spring altogether and go right to summer!

Thanks in advance!

well, it's not just KY, the whole country is freezing! ....I think this winter is pretty weird due to El Nino; it was practically shorts and t-shirt weather right up til Christmas, and now these arctic swings are bringing incredibly cold air all the way down into Georgia and beyond.
The Lexington area actually gets over a foot of snow per average winter, but the last several haven't had nearly that much. This winter hasn't been very snowy, just a few inches so far, supposed to be a couple more later this week.
Spring can't come soon enough for me!

It's been similarly weird in Massachusetts--quite warm through December and now the arctic air here, too. I think that mentally I picture Lexington being at least 10-15 degrees warmer than here no matter what, and it's been about the same many days.

But it is a strange weather pattern everywhere!

No, this winter has been hugely atypical. Last month, we had temps around 60f for highs, when they should have been 35-40f. Now, we're having 15f for a daytime high, when it should be around 45f. Most of our winters are quite mild, especially if you're used to Michigan or Wisco, for example. We get a lot of rain down here, but not much snow. These current cold days are rare, and hopefully next week they'll go back to being that way!

No Micah - have to agree with highliner. We usually do not FREEZE like this!

So- don't worry - lets pray it is a fluke - oh, and Spring is less than 6 weeks away!!

I did see some forecasts that said it's supposed to get to high 30s/low 40s next week, so hopefully they are right!
