If people only put the same amount of effort into driving better, local issues and picking a President... that they put into following UK basketball.
"I don't know who that Beshear is but I voted for him... GO UK!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Why does it usually take an out-of-state native to understand this? Thank you, drink me.
I'm an in-state native that harbors the exact same feelings. And what these Lexingtonians and Central Kentuckians (okay, it's statewide, but certainly more prevalent in Central KY) is that if not for UK and the horse industry, Lexington would not be that much more significant than Owensboro. Seriously.
It's just a game (although I'm a Louisville fan, I do tend to keep things in that "just a game" perspective.) I don't get into horse racing ("But wait, jcm1986, Keeneland is sooooo special, with the racing, the atmosphere, the scenery, it's sooooo Bluegrass and it makes this area sooooo great to live in." Bull crap, it's just gambling without the "poor" stigma.") Seriously, does the vast majority of Americans outside of Kentucky give a crap about UK; or, do even a vast majority of Kentuckians give a crap about horse racing? I think the answers are no to both. (For the record, I see far more Duke, UNC and Texas paraphernalia universally when traveling out-of-state than UK or UofL.)
And Lexington wonders why it can't get its traffic issues under control (although state gov't is much to blame for that, too) and they don't have a cohesive UK-Downtown alliance the likes of Greenville or Chapel Hill. It's b/c they spend so much time ga-ga over that 9.3"-diameter orange ball. It's a shame, too, b/c Lexington has much more potential than they're utilizing, and it's not like the city isn't growing anyway.
Sorry, had to go on my rant for the day.

Just another example of the smug Kentucky girl attitude. This is one example of why there are very few women from Kentucky I can see myself dating.
Let me guess, you go to Keeneland 8x a year, have season UK basketball tickets, and quote the famous Ashley Judd quote like some Catholic grace prayer, don't you? (Sorry, but I have a throbbing headache at the moment.)

Sorry, that is uncalled for. Your never ending whining and negativity deserves a curt response.

I have to say, the New York City forum really is friendlier (most often) than the Kentucky forum. The friendliest forum I've found on C-D period is South Dakota.

Sorry if that's how you feel. Kentucky does have a lot of positives, but the personal negatives (or not-what-I'm-looking-fors-in-life) outweigh the positives. I've, believe it or not, tried to maintain a very positive attitude about this state away from the forum, but I use the forum to communicate the pros and strong cons as I see them. However, due to some personal circumstances I've been trying to leave the state for sometime now.

Ouch! Isn't this a place to discuss the town? A truthful discussion would naturally include the positives and negatives.
If I wanted positives only, I'd read the Visitors Bureau brochure. Thanks to those who are brave enough to speak up and balance City Data
