How much is the rent average for a 1 bedroom?

Btw-When I said if you build it they will come I was not talking about housing. I was talking about specialty grocery stores, museums, parks, upgrading public transit, more libraries, public outdoor art pieces,etc...

I do agree generally with your post.

Based on Craiglist a 1 bdr apartment runs $600 and up around UK, and even $500 and up along North Broadway (south of Loudon Ave). By comparison there is a glut of 1 bdr's in the $450 range in The Highlands or Clifton areas of Louisville with studios in the $380 range doable as well.

1. Better Radio Stations for 20 somethings

AMEN! I thought I would get rid of my XM when I got here. I lived in an area with some pretty good radio stations, and it was like 1/5th the size of Lexington. But I have come to realize that I have only found 2 stations I sort of like... and they play the same 5 songs all day so if I'm traveling around Lex and not just a quick trip to the IGA in my town, then I need XM. Bummer. Not that it's really expensive, but I just thought big city (comparatively for me)= lots of radio stations.

2. Build some new Victorian looking apartment houses around Downtown

Sounds good to me. If I was single, that would definitely be a good choice for me.

3. Better Public Transit
I have heard this. I can't dispute, but I would be crazy without my car no matter where I lived. However, in my previous area of living, we had buses running to tiny tiny little areas... not huge buses, but little ones that ran to smaller towns. The big buses stayed in the city. So pretty much if my car broke down and I could walk a mile, I could get a bus to anywhere downtown I needed to be. Here... not so much. Like I said, NBD, because I had a car, but I could see good public transit being super important if I was a college student with no car.

4. A small zoo, theme park, and museum

Um yes. YES YES. I understand Six Flags is an hour and a half away. But I'm also used to smaller parks (that at least had several adult rides and a kiddie section). I was sad to see that I can't even find any go-karts around! Looks like I have to go to Louisville to find anything.

5. Find progressive solutions for the city's traffic issues

Traffic issues don't really bother me. I actually think Lexington is one city that people are relatively *good* drivers. (At least compared to Pittsburgh, which is the closest city to where I was from before). I don't like Lex drivers' braking and/or lack of ability to drive (wreck!) in the rain. Other than that, this aspect is okay.

you could always try beech bend theme park in bowling green. it's much smaller in scale compared to six flags.

I'm trying to say there has to be a certain population in place to support many businesses. This is fact and it's how most businesses decide on where to build.

This thread is, so far, about what some people think Lexington should have, or what they want Lexington to have.

As I have posted many times, "If you want it for Lexington and think that it will do well, then by all means, start one for everybody." Start a local movement, find those of similar thought, locate an influential backer and if it is truly needed, then someone will get it started.

Be that someone.

I'm doing all I can about points 2-5 by emailing mayor Jim "ridin the fence" Gray just like I did my emailing Mayor Father Abraham in Louisville & Metro Call about various things.

Since I'm a music enthusiast but not an expert in radio all I could do about that is maybe start a Facebook group urging the creation of a listener supported modern rock station. I think it would make sense to put an antennae atop Jetha Knob in Waddy Peytona since a modest 45 mile radius signal could reach both Lou & Lex with ease.

I personally think it would be cool to have a promo saying "Rocking Kentucky's two largest cities from a double wide in Waddy Peytona, it's BG Rock, Kentucky's only listener supported radio station playing your favorite alt and modern rock songs 24/7"

Do it, Census. Obviously a substantial market exists. Do your market research (that will be easy), target your demographics, write your grants and start talking to advertisers. Every radio station started with someone who had a vision for something people were wanting, and a way to make a buck off it. You can be that person.
