Why does everone think that Lexington made the 6th best place to raise a family?
We are considering relocating to 3 different areas (states). Lexington , Knoxville or Cincinnati. We are interested in small towns/ suburbs around cities. My husband would have employment options in these cities as he works for coca cola. Can you all tell me why you think that Lexington made 6th? THat is impressive! This is a tough decision for us. What are the best things about this city and the towns aound it? Thanks!

If you move to Lexington, you want Lexington itself - not the towns around it. Lexington's schools are highly-performing, according to greatschools.net. Just take a look at the rankings there and you'll see which ones are - it's a remarkably high percentage.
In addition, Lexington is a safe place with a highly-educated population - look at the city-data page to see its excellent demographics. There isn't a racism problem in Lexington, probably due to the presence of the universities, and the highly-educated population.
The surroundings are beautiful, cost of living is cheap.... these are some of the reasons it makes a good place to raise a family.

Racism does in fact exist in Lexington, it may not be as pronounced as in other cities (Cincinnati, Louisville, and others) but it is here.
And there are times that the "highly educated population" acts just as dumb as any other city.

Strong Christian values, which emphasize family and love.
I am sad that I have to contradict timelesschild (sorry!), but I see just as much irrational hatred - or more, since they feel factually justified - from the college crowd as I do the trailer park crowd. I say this as a college graduate & a Masters learner, too :O

We have an 11 year old and there are so many things to do here for families. Tons of sports teams for kids to choose from; hiking within minutes of town, great libraries and book stores, abundant beauty, educated population, fantastic school superintendent (top 4 finalist last year for national superintendent of the year), many neighborhoods to choose from that have a true neighborhood feel. We joke that we live in Mayberry. In our neighborhood the kids play outside a lot and walk or bike to school.
I was speaking with a family that moved here from Dallas and the mother commented that they loved Lexington and that they couldn't believe how many free things there are to do in Ky and how great the parks system is.
We take it for granted but wouldn't consider moving anywhere else.

Lexingtongal- may I ask what area of Lexington you live in. I've been trying to do some research and that would help. If you or anyone else could name subdivisions or specific neighborhoods that would be of great help. Thanks so much in advance!!!!!!

There's so many good ones to choose from though. From older neighborhoods like Chevy Chase and Ashland Park to the newer stuff - Ellerslie at DeLong, Andover....
