Where to live between Lexington and Danville?
Hi,
We are empty nesters currently living in Massachusetts. My husband will be working in Danville. We wonder about where to live. Should we try somewhere between Danville and Lexington? I have read that the traffic is a problem. What are some nice places to live within that drive area? How long do you estimate the commute to be? Thanks, we appreciate any suggestions!

Start with Danville. You may be pleasantly surprised. That area is beautiful and for a small town they offer more than most. Centre College is there so there is more to do than you would expect.
If you don't want to live there then come to Lexington. Between Danville and Lexington is Nichoalsville and it doesn't offer as much as Danville or Lex.

Thanks, I will try Danville. My husband is concerned Danville might be too rural. Does anyone know about the hospital there? If we decide to try Lexington do you know what areas would be convenient for the commute? Can you recommend specific neighborhoods to research online?

The closest areas would be Palomar, Dogwood Trace, Firebrook and other areas off of Harrodsburg Rd outside of Man O War. I would estimate the travel time from that general area to be between 20-30 minutes. It's a 4 lane highway most of the way so it's an easy commute.
Danville is a small town but has a nice liberal arts college. This brings more cultural events and arts than your typical small town. There aren't going to be many nice restaurants and I'm not sure if it's still a dry town or not. If you like a drink with your dinner you should check that out.
There are some good physicians in Danville but I'm not sure about Ephraim
McDowell Hospital. It's a bit larger than some small town hopsitals so they might offer more services.

We drove out to Danville yesterday and I was very impressed. We drove in on KY-33 and once in Danville we stuck mostly around the downtown/Centre College area. (My husband visits Danville once a month for work and he said that there is a bypass that has a Wal-Mart, Lowes, etc. but we didn't go that way.) It was my first time there and I thought it was very quaint...lots of beautiful older homes (with people out working in their yards) and several small town businesses downtown. There was a coffee shop that appeared pretty busy for a Sunday afternoon. It looked like the hospital is expanding, there was construction on the block next to it and a sign about the hospital.
We did notice a LOT of for sale signs. When I got home and looked up Boyle county in the lbar.com website, not all of the homes we saw were listed. Seems like there were a lot of coldwell banker signs, so I just looked up the local office in Danville and had more luck surfing for local homes that way.
One of the people at the facility my husband visits in Danville used to commute to Lexington for work. He lives outside Danville (in Burgin, you'll pass it on the way to Danville from 33) and used to commute to the southeast side of Lexington for work (near the Man O War/Tates Creek intersection) and he said it took him about an hour and fifteen minutes leaving at 7:00am (any later than that and he said it would take longer due to traffic).
I keep checking your earlier thread to see if anyone responds...I too am curious about schools, business, entertainment, etc.

I would recommend living close to where you will work. Gas is about to get outrageous. If you get a job in Danville, you can live there. Its a great quaint town with a great amount of culture do to Centre. Lexington is always nearby for weekend excursions. And, if you need large city amenities, Cincinnati and Louisville are close for more shopping and cultural options.

Danville is nice, small town living, and only 35 miles SW of Lexington. The housing costs and property taxes are the lowest of any central KY community of 15,000+. It's a very nice and clean community with decent, hard-working people, three colleges, three state historic sites, one of America's most thriving small town arts communities, decent shopping--you basically never HAVE to leave town unless you have to. I'd much rather live there than Lexington, and I'm much more of a suburban person at heart!

Thanks everybody. I agree it seems there are a lot of homes for sale for a town the size of Danville. I am getting a lot of very good feedback about the town. I also found an issue (Jan 2006?) of Where to Retire magazine in which Danville is featured as a "hidden treasure"! I am unfamiliar with lbar.com but will check it out.

Danville has alot of nice historic homes and a nice Main Street. I'd look around Lexington Road near downtown
It was the first capital of Kentucky. Constitution Square at 2nd and Main is pretty nice.
