Question Good Areas and Areas to Avoid

Just curious as to which areas in Lexington are the best to live in and which ones to avoid?

A friend said that Jonestown and the SE Hills should be avoided but wasn't too specific on areas to look at.

I've heard that there are good areas all over, but I've also heard that not-so-good areas are very dispersed as well. Safety is a big concern for me, as I have a small family.

We can probably afford more, but I don't want to spend any more than $750/month on rent. I know that is limiting, but I appreciate any suggestions.

I've been looking at a lot of places on line, but all of the complexes--even the "nice" ones-- seem to get poor reviews. If you all could shed a little light on the area, I'd really appreciate it.

Would looking outside of Lex, i.e. Georgetown or Versailles, help?

Thanks!

In Lexington avoid the following areas: Kirklevington, Woodhill, Winburn, Georgetown St area and a just a few areas in downtown.

Good areas: Typically much of the Southside of town
Best areas: SW Lexington and SE Lexington (Beaumont and Hamburg areas specifically)
Also, Ashland Park and the Chevy Chase areas if you like older neighborhoods.

I don't know Georgetown/Versailles as well.

InLondon has given you good advice. 40502 is best, this is downtown residential (Chevy Chase/Ashland).

40503/40514 (southside) offer great schools at reasonable prices. 40513 is more expensive, but great (a plug for my neighborhood).

40509 (southeast, Hamburg/Andover and beyond): very popular, schools are mixed.

Most crime is in the "northside". You need someone who can tell you more about Georgetown, etc.

Don't know much about any of the apartment complexes, but here is are links to the crime map and the sex offender registry. These should narrow down your choices: Citizen's Crime Watch Home Page Kentucky Sex Offender Registry

Nicholasville is a nice area particularly the northen part near the US27 bypass. Wilmore is another nice area. both are in Jessamine county.

Avoid a lot of areas North of Downtown.
The best areas: Chevy Chase, most of Downtown, and Hamburg

One more I would add to the avoid list - Cardinal Valley area

Also sure seems like some areas around Tates Creek are less than desirable these days

You can rent a decent house in the Southland Drive/Clays Mill and Garden Springs areas for about that
