Please don't get hung up on the zip code...as I said, that is a HUGE area...once you get here you will realize that S. Rodney Parham WAS west Little Rock - about 30 years ago! Now WLR goes almost to Lake Maumelle. Most people now, other than real estate agents, refer to things west of Shackleford or so as the west end of town. The sprawl has been impressive. Real estate people, on the other hand, really stretch the boundaries there and call anything west of the capitol "west" Little Rock!
Across I-630 and south a little bit is more troublesome, south of Kanis Road/12th St.
You are going to do very well - I've no doubt - some parts of Little Rock are tough but you're really not in one of the areas I would lay awake at night and worry over. Your lease is probably short and as you settle in you will find you special place. Please do let us know how it's going!

I would not have recommended that apartment complex personally, but you'll probably be fine there.
BTW, I live in Memphis, and I can assure you that its 'badness' is quite overrated. It's not like living in Little Rock at all, though it gets compared to LR frequently. Memphis proper has 650,000 people -- more than the entire LR metro area. Nothing alike.

I enjoy living in LR!
I finally unpacked and settled down in my first home on my own in Little Rock after my move from my hometown Helena. Whew! It wouldn't be so tough if it weren't for hot humidity. Since August 2nd, I have been exploring the city of Little Rock and I admit it's a wonderful city to live. I visited UALR, President Clinton Library, River Market, McCain Mall, and AR Capitol Building and I also went to North Little Rock Deaf Church. People are very open-minded and friendly especially liberal people and several deaf people I met. Everything seems to be on the right track for me especially in college and I am very grateful for my wonderful life.

MitchArk, you sound like a very positive person - I've no doubt you will succeed at what you set out to do. I'm glad you've gotten to see the sights, including the gazillion $$ Clinton Mobile Home/Library. Too bad you missed seeing the Huckabee triple wide on the governor's mansion grounds...hey, my hat is off to the guy for being willing to not be a snot about having to move out during renovations! I just love downtown and the River Market area, so much to do and a fun, funky area. Keep us posted and be sure and ask any questions you might have....we'll try to come up with an answer!

Maybe this contact could give you some great info in LR...
There is a school for the deaf in Little Rock. I think it is the Arkansas School For The Deaf and Blind. I do believe that if you contact the school. they could give you all kinds of information on areas to live in Little Rock, groups that you might could find that have other deaf members and other services that would make your life better in Little Rock. You might even enjoy volunteering at the school if they accept volunteers. It's worth a call. Best of luck and blessings to you in your venture/life in LR.

UALR has a great ASL department and plenty of deaf students.
I was in the Interpreter training department many years ago. You will also find that a fair number of hearing people in Little Rock know some sign if not a lot. They will finger spell a lot and use a lot of signed english. Just sign slowly and be patient.
If all else fails, use a pad and paper, almost all people in Little Rock will try to communicate with you given the opportunity.
Dodges Store has an ASL trained employee as do most other stores with very many employees.
