We know LR is special - seems it's getting some notice nationally, too:

Congrats! I was there 15 years ago and it didn't leave a great impression on me, I have to be honest...but a lot can change in 15 years. Did I just visit too early?

Much too early! The River Market and downtown area are really revitalizing, and LR has spread out quite a bit. There's much more upscale shopping, great bistros, and lots of development...with Lake Maumelle, Pinnacle, the Old Mill, and other picturesque places still intact and lovely. And close! There are some growing pains, there is urban sprawl, but it ain't your grandmother's Little Rock anymore. :-)

I remember when I came through, it was a Sunday and the only restaurant we could find open in downtown Little Rock was a Wendy's.

I think maybe I need to swing through again; I've been wanting to visit Central High in Little Rock and hit the Ozarks for a brain reset.

Downtown Little Rock can be a little sleepy on Sundays, even today, though its far nicer than it was in the '90s. Little Rock through most of the '90s was suffering from the image disaster that was the HBO documentary "Gang Bangin in Little Rock." Tourists wouldn't even go to Little Rock and people who lived there stayed as far away from downtown as possible. As recently as the mid 2000s you would find far more of a crowd at the bar at Chili's on Chenal in West Little Rock than you would downtown. All that has begun to change though. If you are going to downtown LR, your best bet is to visit on a Friday or a Saturday. Also don't miss Hillcrest and the Heights, which in my opinion are unique neighborhoods worth a visit.
