I have never understood why Little Rock and North Little Rock are separate cities. Everyone thinks of them as the same city. I believe that if they were to combine it would benifit them both. What to you guys think?

I agree that it would benefit the area, as the city would be able to attract chain stores/restaurants not currently in the market. A city of 240,000 looks a lot more attractive on paper than a city of 180,000. However, it would be quite a feat to make them one being as each city has its own fire department, police, electric company, etc. Jobs would be lost.

we'd still need all the police and fire fighters and a lot of the electric people, parks and rec workers, etc. The only ones we'd lose are admin types.

also people in NLR may pay less in taxes now because they require less services and those taxes may increase if they are annexed. Are the NLR schools better than LR? If so, maybe they wouldnt want to become part of an inferior school system. This scenario is playing out right now in memphis. they are annexing everything they can to grow thier tax base. therefore the annexed areas are becoming part of a miserable city that offers NOTHING positive but taxes the hell out of you.

North Little Rock actually pays more taxes then Little Rock. They have a 12% sales tax while LR just has a 8%. The schools system are almost the same, well I would have to LR school system is a little better.

I merger between Little Rock, North Little Rock, and Sherwood would be a win-win-win for all three of those cities. A consolidated city-county such as what Nashville, TN and Louisville, KY has done would be even better, but I don't think that people in places like Maumelle and rural Pulaski County would go for that. In the meantime, LR, NLR, and Sherwood need to try to get something done.
