Jobs Coming to Conway
FYI --
Several people have asked about employment in Conway over the last few weeks. Gov. Beebe, Mayor Townsell, and HP announced today that HP will open a new call center in Conway and employ 1200 people. I'm sure most of the jobs will be customer service related, but I'm sure there will be supervisory and management positions as well.

Whoa now...I had heard very specifically that it would NOT be a call center and the average salary was going to be $50k. Got a link??

Yeah, we were hoping for something better than a call center. I think HP is hoping to capitalize off our large student population here.
There's a story about the new center on HP's website. (I don't think I'm allowed to link to it here.) From the HP site, choose 'Newsroom', and the story is there.

It's all software development, isn't it? I thought that was what I read...

No. It's troubleshooting and order-taking.

According to the article in our paper today it was more technical which sounds like it will bring fairly good salaries. I am sure part will be simply a call center. Either way, I think it is great news.

I understood it to be a "technical call center" - aka, tech support - from what I saw on KTHV news last night. Those positions typically pay better than just regular customer service, but they're nowhere near software development salaries. I'm not sure how they're expecting $50k average salaries for a tech and customer service support center, unless they're going to highly compensate their management.

Ah. I took my info from the first release...obviously the source was confused.
NWAnews.com :: Northwest Arkansas' News Source
"Three sources familiar with the closely guarded plans, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the average pay of the 1, 200 employees would be about $ 50, 000. One of those sources knew only that the number of workers would be more than 1, 000. “My sense is, it’s much more software development” in nature rather than a printer repair or call center, one of the sources said."

Whoever these people are who were out there saying this kind of stuff anonymously need to be taken behind the woodshed. They really got folks' hope up a little too much. There was no way Conway, Arkansas, would be chosen for any kind of software development hq. We don't have the workforce necessary for something like that.
The 1200 jobs are welcome, of course, especially when it's becoming quite evident that Alltel will be losing employees. (Don't kid yourself into thinking Verizon won't lay off many--or most--of the Little Rock employees; the whole point of buying Alltel was to benefit from economies of scale.)
