I came though LR late last year and drove around quite a bit. Little Rock reminds me of a smaller Charlotte, NC where I used to live.

That's because of the "stereotype" of white, rural, country folks. That's what they've been told through their life, and now that their in the thick of it, folks are being...nice.
How confusing that must be.
No, Strumpeace, fear not that we'll ever be asked to join hands with the rest of Arkansas and sing, "We Are the World", but then again, the "lynchin' tree" got cut down a *long* time ago for firewood.
When people read this forum, or talk to some of the people in the state, and get the message that Arkansas is "anti-gay", or "anti" anything, I think that's unfair. I don't think Arkansas is leading in being "anti", but yes, it's a conservative state.
When California won't go pro-gay....waht do you think Arkansans are thinking?
"If it don'y play in Peoria......".

Rog, don't speak so fast:
Quote:
A group of out-of-state electric company workers helping restore power to Madison County residents were subjected to racial epithets and other forms of harassment while in the area on Saturday.
A portion of the 100-plus crew members on loan from Pennsylvania that were helping restore power in the Boston area were concerned enough to call for help at Ozarks Electric's Fayetteville headquarters. The Washington County Sheriff's Office was then notified, and subsequently the Madison County Sheriff's Office.
According to Madison County Sheriff Phillip Morgan, the Pennsylvania crew, which had split into about three groups, had between 30 or 40 African-American workers included in the 100.
"Some kids were driving around them, waving Rebel flags and mouthing to them," Morgan said. "They showed some weapons and were supposedly intoxicated.
"That's just not right for those people to treat them that way. Those people came down here from Pennsylvania to help us get electricity back on, leaving their families behind, and this is how they are treated. That's just wrong."

^^Sounds like the Arkansas I remember... and just when I was trying to get all nostalgic about the place. If I had a dollar for every such incident I've heard of, I'd retire.
Little Rock is a little more immune to such behavior, but people don't hold back their feelings in non-mixed company, trust me.

As unfortunate as it is,The two words in bold probably had the most to do with this incident.

Don't you think kids tend to reflect the opinions of their parents (and I'd argue even moreso in rural places)?
Alcohol removes inhibitions. I wouldn't doubt for a moment these kids dished out the n-word when in close company and sober. I knew kids like that in high school. Hell, still do.
Isn't it a sin to think dirty thoughts, even if you don't act on them until you're inebriated?

Go to streetview in google maps and you'll find that Little Rock is a surprisingly clean, well-kept city. The roads seem to be in excellent condition as well.
I hope that Little Rock continues to grow, it is a fine city.

Pictures and real life are two vastly different things in this case.

Elaborate please? Pictures are a good source of information but if there is some information you can provide, by all means do so.

I read the prior posts about the African Americans being harassed by teenagers. Of course, not being there, I cannot relate to the veracity of the story. However, if that actually took place it's really sad to hear. For those nice folks to come down and try to help and be treated that way is horrible. I'd like to think that this was an isolated incident, no matter how bad though.

I don't know, I just lived there for four years. What I saw was trash on the side of the roads, yards unkept, blighted buildings, lack of zoning... not in every part of town, but it's more widespread than people let on. Sure, that stuff is everywhere and in many parts of the country, but Little Rock is by no means one of those "special places" where things are clean and well kept.
