It depends on WHERE in Little Rock you look. If you want to see blight, take a look at Asher and Roosevelt, Baseline, Chicot, Geyer Springs or even I-30 when driving through the southern part of the city. Take a look at Rose City in North Little Rock also. One big problem Little Rock has is its pretty much either all real nice, expensive areas or really crappy high crime areas. Somebody with a middle class income and a family generally can't afford to live in Little Rock, which is one reason SO MANY choose to live in places like Conway, Cabot, and Benton/Bryant. Pretty much ALL of the growth in central Arkansas is in these suburban towns while Little Rock has been pretty stagnant the past few decades. While suburban West Little Rock has also seen some growth, inner-loop Little Rock is LOSING population keeping the city at roughly the same population. For some reason most of Little Rock's suburban growth has been outside Pulaski county, making for a dysfunctional sprawl layout and MUCH LONGER commutes.

I am inclined to agree with you but it is probably not politically correct to mention it. It is easy to generalize an entire community.

I'm with strum on this.
That's cool, and maybe I'm wrong.

When I worked in the State of Chicago, there were frequent news reports of swastikas being painted on synagogues, nooses being hung on black students lockers, blatant examples of racial unrest.

Heaven help you if you go to certain parts of town or some of the burb towns if you are white. You are seriously flirting with death, and the police are sure not going to sympathize.

I believe the original direction of this was if racism was prevalent, and not if it existed.

Heck yes it exists. There's *no* place that you're going to go that it doesn't. The bible gives examples of racism and class clashing. How many wars have been started and are still going because of racism?

People who spew the worn out tune of Harrison and "sundown towns" are making sure it exists.

These people spew racism to get attention. When the kids are ignored, they go away. When some drunk kids yell racist things and get media coverage, how many more do you think are envious, and how many people, seeing the credibility these idiots got, want to tell people that they know them?

These are clowns, trying to create a problem, and apparently they're successful enough to get attention.

Buffoons.....and although they are the *extreme* minority, they get the attention instead of the hordes of people that greeted the black utility workers, paid for their meals, took bottles of water to the work scenes, and invited them to their homes if they needed "facilities".

In addition, anyone that takes that sort of idiocy and runs with it as a self-fulfilling prophecy that we're all standing at county lines, nooses in hand at the ready, should choke on their twisted rhetoric.

This is a rare cancer that responds to the opposite treatment of all others. You ignore it.

Yes, you note it, but as long as people want to use history as a weapon instead of a lesson, and pop up and say, "Hey.....!! Look....!! It says right here that there was a lynching in 1903!! That *proves* it!!", we're always going to have that pool of hate-slop for people to roll in like adled pigs.

Just sayin'......ya know?

While I don't necessarily agree with you (about how to deter racism), I'm all for killing this discussion.

I agree 100%

Shall we lay odds on how soon it is seized and carried?

I heard about Colorado doing a marketing campaign for CA businesses and trying to campaign for the businesses to come to CO.
It just made me wish AR would start something like that.

Honestly, Little Rock is a very nice place to live in. I moved away from Little Rock about a year and a half ago to Jackson, MS. Just think of Little Rock, with terrible roads, virtually nothing to do, and a generally bad aura. I used to think Little Rock was "crap," but when I actually did move to crap, I realized that Little Rock really wasn't that bad of a city. I've been back numerous times, most recently November 2008, and it seems like its been improving gradually with infrastructure and overall appearance of the city while Jackson slowly moves into the Dark Age with the economic hardships and the seemingly increasing crime rate. All in all, Little Rock is heaven compared to a lot of places, and is gradually improving from what I see!

Jackson, MS is often compared to Little Rock because they are similar sized cities with similar demographics, both in poor states with negative perceptions. I will say that Jackson has much better retail than Little Rock but other than that Little Rock is superior in every way.

STL to Little Rock is on a distinguished road
Default Surprised by Little Rock

I have been reading the comments about Little Rock and thought I would post my two cent worth . I am a nurse and I currently live in St.Louis, I am moving down there to attend UALR to get my BSN. Since im going to be going to school there and had never been to Little Rock I thought I had better come check it out. ANd just to let yall know before anyone points it out, I cant spell..I spell at like a thrid grade level....I blame it on growing up with spell checker...hahahaha

First, I was born and raised in southeast MO (only lived in St.Louis for the past 8 yrs)..about 200 miles north of Memphis so there was no culture shock or anything like that...just felt like I was back home...people were very friendly down there in Little Rock.

My thoughts on Little Rock...LOVED IT!!!...was very surprised at how clean the city was (I have to admit that I had always heard Little Rock was a dirty nasty city and that Arkansas was a dirty state) but it was nothing like that. Still cant get over how clean it is...you want a dirty city, come to St.Louis..lol. Love St.Louis but it is dirty in parts of town..probably because its a metro of about 3million.

Downtown L.Rock had a lot more than I expected..really like the trolly thing yall have and the river market area. Noticed a couple of new condo towers ? going up. More bars, eating places and stores than I expected. Everything down town looks well kept and over all seemed pretty new, at least looked that way. There were actually people out walking down town and it was kinda busy. Wasnt expecting that in a smaller city.
Drove all the major freeways and couldnt beleive that I didnt have to dodge pot holes the size of your car while driving..lol...we actually have a pot hole season here in STL. Like that there really wasnt any traffic and that you could get any where in town in 20 minutes it seemed. Was really cool driving 440, I think, and looking around and seeing like mountains and TREES...cant get over the TREES..lol I know that sounds weird but to be in a city and see that many trees was awesome!
I didnt really drive around that many of the hood's because I plan on living down town if I can but the houses I did notice were really nice and well kept. I did go through some of the "bad" parts of town (think it was the south side maybe?) but didnt think they were that bad, sure there were some run down boarded up houses but your gonna have that in ANY city.

Love love love the area driving down Cantrell (spell that right?) some very nice homes down that road and once again..NO POT HOLES... Awesome view coming into down town from that way. Oh and another plus to Little Rock was just the natural beauty in and around town. Yall should be very proud of Arkansas and L.Rock for ,if nothing else, just the natural beauty. I know its hard to get a feel for a place from visiting for just one nite but L.Rock seemed like it was a energetic city with alot going for it. Just about every where I went there was some kind of construction going on. Oh and did I mention how CLEAN the city was....
Went to N L. Rock too, they had a cool street down town with some neat looking places....didnt go to any of them but they looked cool. Walked that river trail..very nice over there. There were people out walking/running, people out on the river in boats and just about every one I passed said hi. Talked to a couple of dudes on their bikes for about 20 min, they had nothing but great things to say about living there. They had moved there from other places to, one was from Las Vegas and the other was from San Diego both said they wouldnt want to live any where else. Plus offers some sweet views of down town.

I know I havent given that many specific details but I didnt have alot of time to check out like the malls and art gal's or the Clintion museum, local shops or anything like that..was just there mainly to see what the city looked like and to check out the school and hospitals. But from what I saw and what little I walked around in...yall have a GREAT city and I cant wait to move down there.
Oh i know I have said this a couple of times but its worth saying again...damn yall have a clean city, cant get over how clean it was and NO POT HOLES..hahahaha..ok thats all time for bed.

Oh one more thing...I picked up a paper and have been searching online...another plus to L. Rock is the low cost of living...couldnt believe how low the rents are there. Checked on that new apartment building in N.L Rock..cant thing of the name..but its right there on the river trail basically..and a one bedroom was only like 700 something a month and thats a nice place..rent for something like that here in STL would be about double that..ok..now im going to bed..but cant wait to live down there. Maybe some one could show me around more?
