Default Cabot Arkansas

We are looking at moving to Cabot. What do people think of the community? I am especially interested in the elementary schools. Is there one that stands out?

Also, the areas of town we are looking at are Magness Creek, Nottingham, Hilltop, Autumnwood and Stonehenge. Any advice on those areas? Or if you are a North/East/West/South person, any advice which part of town is best?

Lastly, can you talk to me about race. I noticed that Cabot was labeled a White Flight community. Is there any diversity? How do they handle those of different races? Is there tolerance?

Thanks for your help~

I've recently moved to Cabot. The community? Full of very kind people. The police officers are very visible here. It is definitely what I would call a Wal-Mart and McDonalds-driven little town.

My sister-in-law works at Middle School North. I don't know if it or any other school in particular stands out, though.

I live in Stonehenge. It's a very nice subdivision in that neighbors keep to themselves but are very friendly. People here take care of their yards. It is to be noted, however, that Stonehenge is about 15% finished. Only half the houses that there will ultimately be here are finished, and only half of those are being lived in. It's a very new community. Also, it's in the perfect spot -- no crime, very quiet, but extremely close to the "downtown." 5 minutes tops.

I have a friend who lives in Magness Creek. It is a VERY large community that is connected to Magness Creek School. It's a little further out from the "downtown," maybe 15 minutes? That's about all I know of it.

As for racism, there is an absolutely miniscule African American population here, which was so strange to me having moved here from New York. I haven't seen any outright racism myself, but I do know that when interracial couples enter the Wal-Mart, some eyebrows are raised. I still do not understand this.

I am still very new here, so I'm afraid I didn't help out much. Feel free to ask anything else.

Q-tipper -

Haven't lived in Cabot in a while - but yes, it was one of the first White Flight towns. There are a lot of diversity to the Air Force people from the air base at Jacksonville, but they don't come to Cabot. It has historically been a white town..my son's best friend was the ONLY black child in their school (and I think in the town) when they graduated 10 or 11 years ago?

The police are still a very large presence there for many reasons, not the least of which is that there isn't much to do in Cabot or Jacksonville and the younger kids (before they drive) can't go anywhere anyway and tend to get into problems just hanging out. The flip side is a VERY strong school system and sports system...sports is it. I guess it goes for most kids and teens, but keep them busy with sports or some other activity and you'll like Cabot a lot more. And they'll like YOU a lot more if your child starts early and hangs with it.

You're close enough to be in Little Rock quickly, but the traffic on 67/167 is ick if you're headed to Little Rock at peak times. It's has a very good medical community and you're close enough to LR or Jacksonville or NLR to be at a good hospital quickly.

Cabot has experienced enormous growth as a spillover from the Pulaski County area, and also because it's a great little town. I never, never in my years of living there actually heard anyone say anything about trying to keep any person out, but maybe no one was talking to me because my kid was best friends with the black kid, I don't know....and they are still great friends today, although both in Little Rock. But I digress....there isn't really any diversity to handle, to be honest with you. I don't exactly know why that is, but it just is.

Have you been there, and are you familiar with the different areas? I'd just say it's a middle class and above town. Not sure what the population is now, but it sure has hit a big boom....as have all the areas outlying Little Rock.

Cabot is not a very friendly community for non-whites. I would guess that 3/4 of the people in Cabot today are there because they wanted to get away from the diversity of the other parts of the Metro area. If you are white it would be a great town to live in though and you would fit in perfectly.

Default Cabot Is a Nice place to live

You are right, the school district in Cabot is great. It is the perfect distance from Little Rock, not to far not to close.

Oh my...here we go again....after living in Cabot for a number of years, I don't believe I ever met anyone with the KKK. Not to say they aren't there, but I never met them, and I lived there when Cabot was tiny. There's a whole world of difference in being a white flight town and a bastion for the KKK - Bryant or Conway could also claim a lot of non-diversity, but I never hear anyone talking about that. I think mostly these are folks fleeing LITTLE ROCK and the fast pace, not so much white flight....at least, that's why we went to Cabot. It was a slow, easy town - my spouse and I were both police officers in Little Rock and couldn't go anywhere without being recognized and sometimes having a little scuffle with someone we'd put in handcuffs before. Red Lobster will never forget us......

You know what I think? I think it's a lot of 30-50 year olds looking for the life they had as a kid, where things were safe and small and everyone looked out for each other, the neighborhood feel. Anybody else think that may be part of it?

Default Great family community

Cabot is a greaty community to live in. The focus is truly on the children. Many, many people live here and commute to LR. Unfortunately the diversity in Cabot is lacking and sadly some residents want to keep it that way. The way I look at it, those that embrace diversity would be bringing a needed attitude to the community. I have lived here for almost 15 years and dont worry about locking my doors on my car or house. I do most of the time but if I forget it is not a big deal. The neighborhoods are quiet and friendly. Do be careful when looking at new homes. Some builders are not so reputable here. The local real estate agents can give you the low down. Make sure you talk to more than one though because several real estate agents are related to the builders and will give you a one-sided story.

Have a friend who lived in Jacksonville, AR ,not far from Cabot for many years. It is a White Flight community. Apparently,Cabot is known for having problems when minority schools come to the city for football games. My AA friend said that a busload of Cabot kids tried to spit on him as he was walking by while he was in High School.

Don't let them stop you though. People have to learn that as long as you live in America, you can't run from other races. Take Courage and enjoy Cabot. You pay taxes, you live where the heck you desire.
