Usually you would ask you local Salvation Army office.
They have an Angel tree with names of children who could use help.
Some offices don't do families anymore. They treat everyone equal.
It seems we were told at our local office in NJ that some felt they received less, then others.
Personally, I liked having a family. I usually did a dinner with desert, got them a tree with lights, and
provided toys and clothes......It was a joy to do this. My children learned the happiness is giving rather
then receiving.......( although they still received, lol)

Neat idea and not too early to think about. What annoyed me a bit was that the kids wanted $$$ electronic items - our local mall used to post a list of who (just a name and age) wanted what and could get get very pricey (am talking just one item for one kid).

I too was a bit unhappy with hearing that some families were mad they got less then other families.
That next year the person who ran it said "no more family choice." I remember thinking a lot about that.
The Salvation Army itself seemed to come up with quite a bunch of the bigger electronic items for the children.
I always felt that my family was well taken care of. I did know a person who felt that one outfit each child was providing for a family. She didn't buy any toys......... So in that case maybe she should have chosen a child instead of a family.
Many years ago.........I got the most beautiful letter from a family. It certainly made me cry.
She said she would not have had Christmas for her two children if I hadn't chosen her. I will never forget that letter.

I think they still have an Angel Tree at Park Plaza Mall.

One way to do this is to adopt children off of the angel tree at the mall. There are often siblings together on the tree. Also, it's important to remember the elderly in nursing homes as they are often forgotten during the holidays. There is usually an angeltree for them as well.

Moderator cut: In the absence of your mod~Chickrae~I am temporarily closing this thread since I've had to delete a few solicitations. I believe the original poster was asking for recommendations of how to help families in her area and not send money to people in different regions of the country. If you have suggestions or stories of how you've helped, please contact the OP through DM. Please do not take advantage of her generosity.
