I am scheduled to do my PhD in London starting this Fall. I have been in London many times before, but not for ages.

What is a good amount to budget for rent? food? entertainment?

I am talking ideally in or near Bloomsbury.

Have you made sure you can afford Bloomsbury as a full-time student? Where will you be studying?

A 1 bed flat in Bloomsbury will cost about £1400 a month. It will be small - about 500sq ft. Add about £800 for living on and you're looking at at least £2200 each month.

You could spend a lot more than that though.

UCL.

I am flexible in terms of location, but dont want to be in some shack. A mile or two from Bloomsbury.

How about Algate?

It's Aldgate mintgum.

My daughter considered UCL but one thing that did put her off was the accommodation situation.

Best of luck.

If you will be attending UCL, areas you may also want to consider are Islington, Camden,Clerkenwell. Accommodation in London is very sub standard, especially on a students budget. I go along with Griffins estimation of how much you will need to live on, although it possible to live on less.

Thanks dude.

Really looking forward to it. I have been away from London for ages - work took me here and there, but it'll be nice to be a student again.

I'd suggest using rightmove.co.uk if you're looking for private accommodation. Or you could try renting a room in one of the private postgraduate halls for the first year (e.g. GradPad). They tend to be quite expensive (200-350 pounds/week) though. Also, check out gumtree.com. It has loads of private ads for private houseshares etc.
