It's my favorite.

I read that since many Eastenders have moved out to the suburban communities in Essex or Easternmost London (Romford) that it isn't prevalent in London anymore, also that working class British descent folks generally don't live in London but in the suburbs, is that true?

Pretty much, yes. It's sort of become a fashion statement now, just google Jamie Oliver or "mockney".

Cockney has virtually disappeared from London, sadly. It has been replaced by "LME" (London Multicultural English) which is a mish-mash of cockney/urban/black ("noh wha I meeen"? Whatevaahh"), which is spoken by the young of all races and cultures and drives me potty.

As for the remaining cockneys, they have mainly retired out to the suburbs or "home counties". The nearest you will hear to true cockney is "Estuary English" spoken mainly in Essex and parts of Kent. It's a close relative, but a hybrid.

As for working class Londoners living in London - certainly very few left in the centre, and desirable neighbourhoods. Those with social housing cling on, but only the wealthy can afford private rents/prices. Still plenty in the cheaper suburbs though.

The Cockney accent/dialect has been usurped by the MLE (Multicultural London English) accent/dialect in London.

The Cockney accent has been pushed out to the eastern edges of London, Essex and Kent, areas that typical Cockney speakers have migrated to over the half century.

I personally much prefer the sound and composition of MLE speech to Cockney speech.

You've got to be joking. MLE is the most awful accent in the world bar none.

I watched the movie 'Attack the Block' and switched it off halfway through because of that accent.

White kids speaking in the stupid Jamaican slang cockney hybrid is the most embarrassing thing in the world. It's not cool and the proper cockney accent actually is.

In fact as a northerner I seem to run into more black guys with a proper cockney accent whenever I'm down there and the white kids are running round trying to sound like they're from the Carribean.

I'd slap that sh*t out of my kid if I lived down there. It's happening to a lesser degree in Manchester and I'm proud to say my boy has a normal broad mancunian accent.

Poor misconception there. Multicultural London English transcends 'ethnic group' in London. It's spoken by white, black, Asian (etc) kids growing up in London.

In your opinion, yes.

I personally much prefer the sound and composition of MLE speech to Cockney speech.

Hmm.

Are you an MLE speaker yourself by any chance? If SE9 is your postcode, then quite likely.

In my opinion, it's an abomination. Noh wha ah meeen?

Much as I love him, Jamie T has a lot to answer for. He didn't even grow up in Brixton.
