To be honest with you Britons taking 'afternoon tea' is just a stereotypical myth! Britons don't which means that all of these places are going to be gimmicky and touristy and unfortunately not really full of 'locals' HOWEVER I don't think it being a touristy thing to do will take anything away from the experience, I think any of the places mentioned will be nice - I might even give it a go myself one day! :-). If you want to meet locals perhaps try the cafe's (particularly for an 'English breakfast' or pie and mash shops (though 'afternoon tea' would probably be a nicer thing).

"afternoon tea" is an invention for the tourists, or if done in any way at all, done at someones house.

As a tourist about 15 years ago I enjoyed it here. I think I went to one in York but I see they are all over the place now (relatively speaking.) What I remember best is the walls lined with vintage teapots. The decor was attractive and we were all "ladies" as I don't think too many men would have been caught dead in that place.
