From someone who has done plenty of research on a UK vacation, I think the free museums in London would save you quite a bit of money. I have heard that you could spend a day in the British Museum. I would take advantage of the free museums and pick one or two of the attractions that will be costly..such as London Zoo or Kensington.

You could always spend a few days exploring areas outside of London proper. Whenever I get the money and time to vacation the UK, I have narrowed my places down to the following: Hiking in Northumberland, perhaps hiking in Wales, Snowdonia comes to mind. Visiting the southwest..Devon and Cornwall. And for the sake of studying Brit Literature in college..visit Stratford On Avon.

Chilaili gave some excellent suggestions. The Oyster card will also get you on the buses, and on a drizzly day you can stay warm and dry on the upper deck of some of those without breaking your bank. But be sure to check out the "zones" when you buy a card. We just bought for zones one and two.

Do try the two markets, Borough and Camden. They're for locals and you get the real flavor, not a "touristy" show. Also google for day walks. We bought a book on them but there are more on-line I've been told. Had a real blast walking around and have a much better appreciation of history because the Brits put up blue plaques on the sides of building everywhere a lorry once broke down - it seems.

Plan on almost a full day at the museums and galleries. They are so huge you won't do them justice with a "two hour tour".

Covent gardens is a great place to hang around. Lots of "busters" [side walk entertainers]. But watch your stuff in crowds. There is that, too.

southdown, thanks for the sites. I bookmarked them. I'm planning a trip in 2012 for the Olympics.

Any more websites about anything to do w/ London would be helpful: Food, weather, transportation, shopping, etc.
