Default Need advice about visiting London

Hi, guys, my friend and I will visit London during this Christmas for a week (Dec 25th-31st), and I'd like to know your suggestions on where to visit.

Since everything is pretty much closed on Christmas Day, what are the places to see without them being opened?

What's the ideal place to shop in Boxing Day (26th)?

Besides the City itself, we'd also like to explore a bit farther. One place is Bath. Are they any other particular interesting must-go places, preferably within in 2 hours driving/train distance from London?

It is our first time to the UK and we are pretty much clueless except those world famous destinations such as the London Tower, Big Ben and Buckingham Palace. So any advice is welcome

Thank you!

During your stay in London, I suggest visiting the Museum of London to get a better sense of the city's development. The British Museum is also always a good place to visit.
For shopping I would take a stroll along Oxford Street and Regent Street which are the 2 major shopping streets of London.
Bath is definitely an interesting place to visit as well.
You might also want to visit Windsor in order to see Windsor Castle.

Just remember there are many places still closed on Boxing Day! I was in London for Christmas years ago and the entire place shut down. No tube. No buses. No stores open. NOTHING. But going from church to church to hear the choirs was fun!

I'm not from London so can tell you very little. the 26th is public holiday in the UK so museums & tourist sites will probably be closed and restaurants perhaps more limited (there will be places that are open but bookings advised and price will be steep).

However, the 26th is the first day of the retail sales and the major stores will be insanely busy.

Default Google is your friend !

OK, so the first thing you need to do is research, research, research !

For transport:
Home | Transport for London is the official website for all public transport in London and will give you detailed service schedules for the Christmas period

For accommodation:
Pretty much everywhere will be open, but many hotels will already be getting booked up. You need to move fast ! Try the following for the major chains:
Hotels - Room Rates, Hotel Reservations and Vacation Deals from InterContinental Hotels Group - Official Site
Book a hotel online with Accor Hotels
Hilton - Home
Online Reservations | Hotel Rooms | Hotels, Holiday & Business at Marriott
Radisson Blu (SAS) Hotels & Resorts UK - Book Luxury Weekend City Break Deals & Business Accommodation - Radisson Blu Hotels & Resorts
Travelodge
Premier Inn - Book Cheap Hotels in the UK & Worldwide from £29

and this excellent site for reviews, and to find smaller places:
Holiday Reviews - Hotels, Resorts and Holiday Packages - TripAdvisor

For shopping:
Most of the large department stores along Oxford St will be starting their sales on Boxing Day. Check out their websites for details:
Selfridges & Co
John Lewis - Shop online at Britain's Favourite Retailer
Buy designer clothes, home and beauty brands from House of Fraser
Marks & Spencer
Debenhams Online UK Department Store - Debenhams Online
Topshop - Womens Clothing - Womens Fashion - Topshop
Stats about all US cities - real estate, relocation info, house prices, home value estimator, recent sales, cost of living, crime, race, income, photos, education, maps, weather, houses, schools, neighborhoods, and more

and scores of others... Not forgetting of course:
Harrods - Luxury beauty and fragrance, fashion accessories, gifts
Welcome to Harvey Nichols. New Pre-Fall 09 collections now available online and in store.
Fortnum & Mason Hampers UK - Experts in Food Hampers, Gift Hampers and Wine Hampers since 1707 - Fortnum & Mason

For eating out:
London & UK Restaurant & Venue Guide — Square Meal

And a very helpful page from Time Out, London's principal listings mag:
http://www.timeout.com/london/.../Things_to_do_in_London_on_Boxing_Day.html

Have a great trip !

Thanks a lot for the useful information.

In case all public places are closed, what are the things that can be visited then besides shopping?
Another question, do you think it is a good idea to living within the city core, or somewhere a bit away from it, such as Paddington or Earl's court? We will be taking public transportation but don't want to lose too much time on the tube/bus since we have limite time and London offers so much to see.

many thanks!

On Christmas Day I would recommend visiting the parks, in particular Hyde Park and Regent's Park. You could also take some time strolling around, seeing Trafalgar, Leceister Square, Big Ben and Parliament, China Town, etc.

forever blue, another thing, try to not pack too much into your time in London; you'll need to allow time to eat and rest and for getting around...just a FYI...
