Just curious what people think about watering the lawn. My lawn gets direct sunlight almost all day, and I believe this causes it to get brown in certain areas. How much should I be watering the lawn - frequency and length? Suffolk County says to water every other day for longer periods of time. Meanwhile almost all my neighbors water every day. I am worried that too much water is promoting weed growth, but that not enough water is resulting in a lawn with brown spots. Every year, I have a problem with nutsedge and with other various "clumps" of weeds (not sure what they are called, but these can be easily pulled out, but leaves a hole in the lawn).

What is everyone's opinion?

I have too much shade, so watering is not an issue.
My office is in a sunny area; the sprinklers go on early every morning for 45 mins and the lawn is looking good.

You have to be careful with overwatering despite the sunny area and thinking it will evaporate. Some folks will argue watering at night vs watering early am. At home I don't have inground sprinklers, so watering occurs when I move the sprinklers and turn on the water

If your lawn is "crunchy" and you leave serious footprints in the grass, you need to water more. Watering at night can lead to fungus and other turf diseases. How much are you watering now? Nutsedge can be sprayed without killing the rest of the lawn. I've been told that pulling it out can increase the nutsedge problem.

I have same situation. Lots of sun and grass had random brown patches. Just water 40-45 mins per zone 3 times a week (I have 4 zones) and you will be okay. The grass is not dead, its just trying to survive (unless its new grass that you planted). Relax.
FYI, my grass is coming back up.
