Default Are Shirley Mastic and Mastic Beach as bad or worse than they were 7 years ago?

Well that about says it. I left after purchasing my first house there. People kept saying that the place would improve. I never saw one bit of evidence of this.
I am so glad that I sold my house and bought a home in a decent area.
Have to say it beat renting from a financial standpoint.
There is something wrong with that area to my mind. Perhaps it can never overcome the negative rep it has developed over the years. Perhaps the people who stay there just opt for an easier life where a new Durango and a pair of spiral bushes flanking your front door place you firmly in the middle class. IDK

So you're looking for affirmation that you made the right decision to sell 7 years ago?

I have family members who bought in Shirley in the mid 80's (actually the area is now known as Smith Point). From what they say the area never improved like it was rumored to be as an upcoming area. Most of their neighbors are a little nuts or strange with a light sprinkling of average normal working class types.

I can't imagine why Sheena12 would start a post like this. Are you thinking of moving back to the area or do you just enjoy the weekly bashing this area gets on this forum?!
I've lived in the "Tangiers" section for 34 years...can't say I've ever had any problems here. Houses in my area are well-kept, neighbors are friendly but not in-your-face.
The only problem I have is that once you buy here (because the houses are less expensive) it seems you're stuck here because house values around here just don't increase comparative to other LI areas.

I think Northern Shirley has improved nicely over the last 10 years.

Mastic Beach may still need some help.

No I am not asking this to bash the area. Actually I am curious.
I happen to think that it is a good alternative to renting for young couples with children not yet in school.
I did not despise the area until I had to interact with the mothers of my eldest child's peers.
I just thought hat the people there were very ...different.
Their status symbols were different.
Strangely they bragged quite a bit about things that seemed trivial.
Or about things that should NOT be boasted about.
Mildly criminal activity or being related to a member of the mob.??? Like this is a GOOD thing???
I am very very happy to be back on the North Shore.

Never gave moving back a thought. Not for a second. I have never met ruder, more infantile people obsessed with their toys and bling than I did there.

I got by sending my kids to private school and camp in the summer so they did not spend their time walking the streets, going into litter strewn woods or playing a perpetual ball game in the middle of the street.

I have never met people who mangled the English language more in my entire life. Braggarts, big woman, bling and BS artists. I never wanted to know about that latest acquisition that just happened to "fall of the truck" ...wink

After stealing my son's bike and retrieving it after I saw the 9 year old proudly riding it down the street. I confronted the mother. She said "boys will be boys whadaya expect! An not fuh nothin' but I don't think yaw son fits in wid the otha boys on this block, if yah know what I mean"

I did know what she meant and I said " Thank you I agree with you" Then I got out.
These were NOT section 8 people they were homeowners.
