Hey all, I grew up spending my summers out east on the north fork, but now live in westchester NY. I miss those beaches out east, but they are just too far of a ride to take for a daytrip.
My wife really wants me to get our children (5,3, and 9 month old) to the beach. MY wife loves ocean beaches, I was just wondering abou tJones beach, how much it costs, what are some good beaches there? ( I heard that Gilgo beach is nice) What are some must haves for the beach there. I have never been there, but plan on making about 6 week day trips there this summer. Thank you in advance for any advice.
Frank
I think it depends on where you park, how far you are willing to walk, and when you go there.
I thought it would be safe to go there in the late afternoon a few years ago, but right after we sat down, we had about 20 people show up who chose to work on their Club MTV Latina schtick right next to us. I mean, they actually put a cardboard box down on the sand, starting blasting reggaeton and doing the booty shake, doing their best to attract whatever attention they could. It wouldn't have been so bad if they weren't kinda fat.
It's still the topic of wise cracks to this day from some of my Park Slope friends.
I have been through the Jones Beach area the past few weeks. The water tower is being rehabbed and is sad looking with it's top resting on the ground adjacent to it. I can't speak for the boardwalk side, but isn't a portion of it barricaded off because of the proposed Trump project?
Also with Jones Beach, pick the wrong day and you might wind up in the middle of the 'fraternity' party held there every summer. It can be rowdy and detract from the calmness of the beach.
The OP would be best off going to Robert Moses as brimasa suggested.
Once at RM you can take a long stroll to the Fire Island lighthouse. It has been a while, but there's a nude beach in that vicinity -- does anyone recall if it was east or west of the lighthouse?
It really depends on what field you go to. I would probably stay away from field 4 and you should be fine.
As a kid we would head to WE2. It is my understanding that it has become an ridiculously long walk over the sand to the water as sand has built up over time.

Just a heads up if you are looking at alternatives: AVOID LONG BEACH!
They charge 10$ (I heard 12$ now!) per person. A family of 5 can get on the beach for the low low price of 50$! (maybe 60$!)
Wow, thanks for that warning!
