My son just bought 2 of them. He lives in Baiting Hollow. Anyone know good places for him to go? Is it safe to kayak on the sound if you stay close to shore?
Thanks!

The sound is pretty big. I don't know the age of/or experience level of your son, but the sound can be pretty scary. Smithtown Bay, Nissequogue River, Peconic River & Bays, Scallop Pond (Southampton) are lovely and pretty safe.

Peconic River gets a lot of kayak traffic. It's a great place to kayak. The bay is a little rough because of a great deal of motor boat traffic. There is a county park (maybe) along the Nssequogue that rents kayaks. Sorry can't remember the name.

there is a kayak/canoe ramp at Niss River SP that's pretty convenient .. but they charge a fee from 8am-4pm . You can sneak in at the park further up the river on Landing Ave, or park at the county park on Jericho Tpke in Smithtown (just east of the bull on the south side) ... no pass needed. You have to duck under the Jericho Tpke bridge at high tide though, and it's muddy at low tide. I've gotten stuck there a few times ...

I think the Peconic River is your best bet. Very scenic and right through the pine barrens. There's a launch off Forge/S.River Rd as well as several off Rt.25 in Riverhead. Not far from Baiting Hollow at all.

Go to the Peconic sound.....great paddle! Just have to watch the boating lane in high season but you can can go across between the north and south fork. The bay constable will stop you if you are not wearing a life perserver and you must have a whistle.
