Hmm. Family of 5 here with 2 teenagers. When I'm being good, we spend about $800/month. I shop at Costco, but only buy what we will eat. Impulse buying at Costco is one way to spend too much! I go once a month to Costco and spend $400. Been doing it for a while now and it's always plus or minus $25, but it always hovers around $400. One trick is to remember to buy some staples (like dishwashing detergent) every other month. Don't over buy and just buy what you will use in one month. Then I buy fresh fruits and veggies and whatever I need after the Costco fresh stuff runs out at Stop N Shop for about $100/ week. I like Stop N Shop b/c it has lots of organic produce. The fruit this year has been really good and they do run good specials. $800 a month and we eat fairly well. Good luck!
[quote=Jennyzump;14707987]Dawn: When is the Super Shop-Rite set to open?
I heard it was scheduled to open in September. I asked when I was at the Shop-Rite in Hauppauge. They told it it will be a different owner than the one is Hauppauge so I wonder if the sales will be the same. I was at Costco today and saw 4 trucks at the new site. It didn't seem like much was going on though.
I also have family of 4 with kids the same age, and I spend between $200-$250 a week. I also use Stop & Shop because I usually use Peapod. Frankly, I am a working mom and I simply do not have the time to run around to five different places trying to get the best deal. I barely had enough time to shop at one place once a week which is why I started using Peapod (which I think is worth the $7 delivery fee). It spares me the aggravation of shopping, loading all that stuff onto the belt, packing the bags, loading them back into my cart, loading them into my car, then loading them yet again into my house...uggh. Thanks but no thanks. Before I had 2 kids and the work schedule I have I would have never considered using a delivery service, but now I think it's great. Anyway, I too don't go crazy with expensive food but try to buy lots of fresh fruits and veggies (organic stuff here and there). We buy practically no junk with the exception of ice cream and Oreos. Of course this bill includes paper supplies and such, but I can almost never keep it under $200, and there have been weeks when it's closer to $300.

I heard that the Hauppauge owners are supposedly opening another location in Patchogue...
One person, around $400 a month. I shop at Whole Foods for chicken, seafood and produce and try to catch the weekly specials at Waldbuams, Pathmark for regular stuff. The produce sucks in most food stores so I avoid them although in the summer I can do OK at the farmers markets. I am trying to cut down some...but I also don't eat out much so I don't find my budget too high
Stay away from the overpriced, fad places like Whole Foods and you will do just fine. Nothing wrong with canned and frozen items either. Fight Food Nazism.
Throw a little butter and salt on it and you're good to go
