Does anyone go camping on LI? We go camping about once or twice a year with a pop-up, usually off LI (PA & upstate) We'd like to go more often locally, where do people go? What are some favorites?

Thanks

I think the most camping you can do on LI is at a hotel.

I used to camp out on the Outer Beach. It has been years -- do they still allow that with the 4WD permit?

I see people camping at Blydenberg but I do not recommend it. There isn't much to do there. A great place to go for a walk though

I did out in the Hamptons about 10 years ago. We found out aftrer the fact that it was a 'dry' campground (the ranger stopped by for a visit and made us dump out a couple bottles) and in the summer there was really no where to hide from the heat out there. Still, we had a great time. I would like to try it on the beach somewhere if that was possible.

Follow this Camping on Long Island, NY - Citidex Long Island or this Fun On Long Island | Long Island Convention & Visitors Bureau link for LI camping
With a little imagination, your backyard can double as a camp spot.

Part of the required equipment to take on the beach was a self contained port-o-lav. The ranger would inspect the vehicle to make sure we had the proper gear and let us move onto the beach. The privy was used to sneak the beer onto the beach as the rangers checked coolers, but never the inside of privies! (NOTE: this was a brand new toilet which was never used, but the outside was scuffed up from being in and out of the truck.)

We were young and dumb and having fun before reality set in and we were forced to grow up and use the privy for its intended purpose.

The heat can get a little intense out there -- living close enough to the beach, we would sometimes leave our camp set up and run home if it became too hot.

Ditto.

There are scout troops from the Hudson Valley that go there because it is such a nice spot.
