We just bought a house in Levittown. We had lived in a house we rented about 2 miles from this house so we have been in this area for about 4 years.
I was in the backyard relaxing this afternoon and saw movement.. figured it was squirrel. I looked up and saw that it was a large mouse or a rat (not sure which) running along the bottom of our back fence and then go under to a neighbor's yard.
The whole time we lived in the other house we never saw a mouse/rat in or outside of the house.
Should we be concerned? Think it was just an isolated incident? Where the heck do they live around these areas where it is all residential?
They live under woodpiles, decks, piles of debris, etc. You can be cleaner than Mr Clean and still have them. My SIL in Seaford gets rats along her back fence near the firewood.
Field rats. There's really not much you can do about them. They're not going to bother you (if you don't bother them). Keep all the piles of junk away from your house, keep your garbage pail lids on tight, don't leave things around that will attract them.
My parents used to get the occasional rat come to their bird feeder. A .22 rifle took care of them. Used short range cartridges, no louder than a pellet gun.
