There's plenty to see at the zoo. In the outdoor exhibits, the animals tend to take a siesta during mid-afternoon, epecially, if the weather is hot, but there's plenty of activity at the indoor exhibits. Get there as early as possible. Bring your own food if you are trying to save $$$. Check the schedule for animal feedings. During certain weekends in season, there are special scheduled events. There are certain "corporate weekends" where if you are an employee of certain large companies, admission is free.
As for the animals? It's best to get there at opening when all the animals are active. There's no way in heck you'll see the entire zoo in one day, so you should download a map and decide which animals you're most interested in seeing and plan your day that way. I always get to the zoos at opening time and always have a great time.
If you look at the schedules for animal enrichment and get to the exhibit at that time, you'll see some great stuff.
The family membership is $125/year. Totally, totally worth it. I'm upgrading this year to the Family Premium membership.
