I agree with 1nevets. Stay upstate. It has the vibe you want, lower taxes and better value. Commuting into the city from LI is no prize. It took me 55mins by train from Levittown (Nassau!) plus driving to the station and if you leave after 6:30 or so, good luck finding parking at the station. Then the subway from there. Usually 1.5-2hrs door to door. My friends get in from Tuxedo/Suffern in less than 1hr door to door by express bus. Metro from Woodstock not likely longer than the LI commute, plus you get the vibe you like with lower taxes and more trees. The extra cost of the commute will be made up in the lower taxes upstate.
