First, I'd like to know how a group of black people can be considered Indians. I've been to the Labor Day PowWow and the ones who were Shinnecock looked like typical black people to me, the same goes for the Poospatuck.

Just being federally recognized, will this give them the power to put a casino where ever they choose on LI? Who came up with these crazy rules?

Time for this country to stop with this Indian nonsense. They all should get over it..they lost...deal with it. In particular, Long Island Indians are as real as I am Mother Teresa

Interesting. I visit the Poospatuck reservation about 15 times a year. At first, many of these Indians do look like the typical black person, but upon closer inspection you can see they are mixed with Indian. I am not sure exactly how the federal government rules are set up and I am not going to get into a political match, but I think it is more than fair that these folks finally got recognition from the federal government after trying for so many years. It is going to be interested to see what casino comes of this or what disputes are waged with the State and/or Suffolk.

They look Black because they are mixed with Black. Just like when a white person mixes with a Black person the person looks Black.

After the Revolutionary War, many free Blacks were encouraged by the Whites to leave the western end of Long Island (Kings County) and migrated to the east where they were accepted by the Shinnecock and other Indian nations then present in the area. Inter-marriage followed.

So? Many blacks are mixed with white but they are not considered white. They obviously found some loophole to get extra rewards, grants and special status from the government. That is prime real estate they are living on and they made it look like a slum. If you're Indian at least 75% of your genes should be Native American.

Loophole??? It was the whites who said that if you had one drop of Black in you then you are Black. They did this so that they could own more slaves.
