Sometimes it would remind me of a trailer park.

Mind you, these were the same homes going for 450 or so at the height of the market with 10-11k in taxes. There just wasn't a lot of "Bang for your Buck".

During my time in Plainview, I fought hard to try to limit the school budgets. However, the parents didn't care. Plainview parents, many of them at least, have an inferiority complex when it comes to Syosset and Jericho nearby. They feel the only way to close the gap with those schools is to throw MONEY at the school district. They rubber stamped so many bad budgets I can't begin to describe the waste.

That's why you have 11k taxes on a 1,200 sq ft ranch.
I have heard that from more than one parent and teacher in the area...Plainview/Old Bethpage is supposed to be the stepping stone to the aspirational Syosset/Jericho schools/area.

Thanks for the comments. While I'm sure there's truth to the fact that I see so many signs since I'm looking, I primarily based this observation on the fact that, while looking in East Meadow for months, I didn't notice as many signs. I'm not sure the size of both areas though, and whether that'd have something to do with it.

The taxes really are quite high though, which is the one thing I'm going to need to keep in mind with this area.

I think elsewhere in the country the houses are a little bigger, not only acreage wise but also with respect to size of bedrooms and other rooms. So the biggest hurdle is the realtors will have to refrain from using some favorite words like "roomy", "big", "spacious", "open" etc from the listings when describing a 4-5 bed 1500 sqft house.

I don't know if it's because I live under a rock in Plainview, or what, but our taxes for our large split (one of the larger models) are not $15,000...I also don't see much of an Indian/Pakistani presence where I am (are you thinking near Hicksville?) I don't care as long as no one bothers/hurts me or my family, but...the Plainview you're painting does not sound like the Plainview I live in!

Default A map of the Hamlet of Plainview in the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County

A map of the Hamlet of Plainview in the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County:

The Hamlet of Plainview has a different border than does the "Plainview, NY 11803" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Plainview, NY 11803" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Plainview and a place can be in the Hamlet of Plainview and have other than a "Plainview, NY 11803" mailing address): places with a "Plainview, NY 11803" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Plainview are in the Hamlet of Woodbury; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Plainview that have an "Old Bethpage, NY 11804" mailing address.

Lipumpkin,

No one is saying that all splits in Plainview are 15k in taxes, but they are very high. Most that I've seen are around 13k or so. That's outrageous for a split.

Take a look at this little ranch...it's 369k with no updates and yet it is almost 11k in taxes! That's nuts and Plainview residents have only themselves to blame for rubber stamping all those fat school budgets and caving to teacher union demands.

Plainview also lacks enough commercial areas for school tax revenue.

AllAmerican,
That was the biggest difference when we were house hunting in Syosset vs.Plainview...the taxes were cheaper but homes a little more in Syosset...vice versa in Plainview...IMO, it all evens out!
