Default Moving to Rockville Centre - any jews??

Hi,

Our family is possibly moving to RVC. I am Jewish, and my partner is Catholic. We want our kids to have friends of both faiths and not be the minority or immersed in a very religious community of either faiths. We are looking there because of the commute to NYC.

Please let me know your thoughts, and if you think we would be comfortable there.

Are non-jews not good enough or something? You say you are looking for either faith, but you only ask about jews.

I don't think there's a big jewish population in that area, tbh.

Rockville Center is the headquarters for the Catholic Church in our area. It is overwhelmingly Catholic from my understanding, but the people are very warm and welcoming.

By and large, even the most Catholic area of Long Island is pretty Jew friendly. Probably more so than the heavily orthodox five towns who are less welcoming of anyone not strictly orthodox. Since you married a Catholic, I'd guess you don't fit that bill. I'm sure there are plenty of Jewish kids in RVC. It's Long Island, not Iowa!!

The other part of THE TRUTH is that the villages and hamlets that have a large secular Jewish population are not very welcoming to their Torah-observant brethren.

Walter,

That's a good point. I'm not Jewish, but some of the most close-minded people I've ever met were non-practicing secular Jews (bit of an oxymoron I know) ridiculing their own brethern who were practicing.

Uh oh, the secular Jews are Torah bashers. Ugh, give me a break. This is too silly to argue with. We all know the issue in the 5 towns is that the Orthodox want to opt out of paying public school taxes and are working to put in politicians that represent this option. While i am against the opting out, I'm not sure I disagree with the tactic. That's democracy. Those who get involved get representation. Those who don't have no basis to complain.

Why pay for public schools when you send your 10 kids to HAFTR or HALB
