The "500%" is just a different way of saying the same thing that was said in the first article which quoted a "$1000 property tax increase".
They're talking about the Suffolk County General Fund portion of the tax bill, not the entire thing. They're saying that the average homeowner pays $200 to the County General Fund (that does not include police, which Levy cannot cut back because it's subject to the police union's labor contract agreement with the County). So if you increase that $200 five times, there's the $1000 average increase that the writer of the other article quoted.
Not saying it's good or right that our taxes should keep going up, but Newsday just LOVES to stir the local pot by putting their typical semi-tabloid spin on things by the way their articles are always written.
Let's face it, Newsday has
never been known for objective reporting and their editorial bias has
always been toward the left. If they can manage to get people up in arms against Levy and his stand against illegal immigrants (Newsday also supports the passage of the "amnesty" bill currently in the Senate) by playing the "Levy's going to make our taxes go through the roof" card, they won't hesitate to do it. They make much less of a big deal about the lawmakers who started this whole flap in the first place because they didn't like Levy's tough stand against illegal immigrants on LI.
Buried in the articles are the words "MAY" (have to cut services), "OR" (not WILL) raise a portion of the property tax assessment by "UP TO" (not BY) an arbitrary amount. Spin doctoring at its finest, and typical Newsday. (ask any LI firefighter!)
