For the occupants: Bottled water, first aid kit, propane for the gas grill, manual can opener, non perishable food to last for a few days, fresh batteries for flashlights and radio, cell phones charged, insurance documents in a safe place, some spare cash on hand, and if you own a generator, make sure it is running well and you have adequate fuel to run it. Paper plates, cups, forks and knives to minimize water usage in the event there are issues with the water system.
As for the house -- bring lawn furniture in (or sink it into the pool --which I have seen done in FLA), if Earl charges right at us and is still a Cat 3-4 boarding the windows will help prevent damage to them. My greatest concern is going to be with the large oaks around my house.
There are some thinks you can do to protect your house...
Plywood for the windows, bring in anything that can be picked up by the wind and launched through your widow, that sort of thing.
But by far the most important is to have a plan for you and the kiddies. Where will you go if you need to evacuate...and when will you leave so that you are not sitting on the LIE for 8 hours?? If you are not under an evacuation order and decide to stay, do you have a survival kit (and enough no-perishable food and water) for a few days??
Earl will probably miss LI...but it wont be by much. As of this evening there is about a 30% chance that Suffolk county will get 40-45 mph winds and 20 ft surf. Its a good time to get everything in order.
Should I have a concern living on the south shore of Nassau? Over by JFK/Peninsula Blvd.
There could be flooding in some of the back bays because the high surf piles the water in and won't let it out. If you get high water during a noreaster...then you might see something similar. As long the track stays as is this morning...there wont be too many problems that far west.

I went to that site and clicked "Secure your home"..... you know .... I really cannot even attempt to verify if I need to do anything, forget about actually implementing the fixes.... now thats scary AFAIAC.
I was looking to remodel my house anyway, and to finally get my money's worth out of my stupid homeowners/flood insurance. Might be a good thing for me.
