What social services would you cut? The MTA has already ceased providing services and several lines for people that have no option. Last year NYS cancelled many youth services programs and they were going to kill off a a $1 an hour increase last year for home health aides to $12.50 an hour before they came to their senses.

Social services is always an easy target unfiortunately they are hit the hardest in this economy, alcohol abuse, child abuse goes up. Meanwhile you have payouts like last week to retiring officers, dual parks commissioners, OTB, seems like those at the top should be able to sacrifice more for those at the bottom.

Hmm how about the $250 a day Nassau county taxpayers pay for crackheads and lazy welfare rats to stay in LI hotels with no timeline to get a real job?

Changes to county retirement employees benefits and salaries will only effect new employees. Since the county is not hiring there will be no immediate savings

I don' t agree with funding for homeless but if they are paying 250 a day for a hotel thta seems a little high, where did you get that number ?

Also back to the original post how is he a breath of fresh air, since he is now proposing borrowing $364 million over the next 3 years to freeze taxes? That sounds very similar to Gulotta.

Look at his past history with Gulotta.

We had a horrible choice of CE: him or Suozzi. That's the way most elections are on LI. You have to choose who you think will be the LESSER evil.

I think we should have kill shelters for the homeless, skels, degenerates and less fortunate.
Just like for the animals...give 'em 10 days and then...

Borrowing under Gulotta to pay expenses started the downward spiral and continued to a certain extent under Suozzi. This just makes matters worse, kind of like taking out a loan to pay your utilities. Its hard to believe that a county with this amount of wealth has to take out a loan for anything.

Of course its similar to Gullotta. Mangano and Schmitt (the Presiding Officer) were both in the Legislature going back to the Gullotta days, and were his closest allies.

Suozzi was just ass bad and blew the surplus on the county seat patronage jobs for his friends. You can't trust any of them

Suozzi’s tenure occurred during 2 severe economic downturns and Mangano’s is finding out there are no easy solutions (Indian casinos?) in this economy. There was tremendous waste under Gulotta who presided in a great economy. He refused to raise taxes and began borrowing money to pay expenses (sound familiar). Suozzi did make improvements and the bond rating did increase under him but he also hired a lot of cronies and was more interested in running for governor than straightening out the county.

The biggest problems are the tax certiorari and the union contracts particularly the police and Mangano has no answer but to borrow more money and pander to the people about freezing taxes.

More borrowing to balance the budget in a recipe for disaster. If there is no recovery in 5 years, it guarantees massive tax hikes or bankruptcy (probably the better option). Given that Japan had almost the identical problems we had here in the US and they are going on their second lost decade, Mangano is definitely playing with fire by gambling with Nassau's finances like this.

IMO Chris Christie is the only politician facing these problems realistically.
