Harborfields is considered the best, it is ranked the highest in the area and among the highest in Suffolk County. Elwood is also a very good school district, statistically and rankings a little behind Harborfields but still very good. Huntington and South Huntington are not considered good school districts. I would definitely go either Harborfields or Elwood.

All of Centerport is in Harborfields. Greenlawn is either Harborfields or Elwood. East Northport is either Elwood or Northport (also a good district). Like you said, Huntington has the 4 mentioned above. The parts of Huntington in the Elwood district aren't that great. Some of the parts in Harborfields are nice, some aren't. Pretty sure you'd be able to tell just by driving around. Greenlawn, Centerport and East Northport are all fine.

If you want to be in Harborfields any of north Greenlawn is nice too. Compared to Centerport you're a little further from the beach but closer to the town which has restaurants, shops, great library, etc.

To get a good profile of the schools, go to www.newsday.com.....type (broken link) in SCHOOLS in the search window. A report card of all Nassau and Suffolk schools will pop up. You get to search by school district.

It provides reading, math scores as well as teacher:student ratio, amt spent per pupil, percentage of students going on to 4 yr or 2 yr colleges, etc.

All of them are excellent, all of them have their issues. To pick one based on reputation alone I would agree with the poster who recommended Harborfields. However based on first hand experience I would suggest you find the neighborhood you desire first and push the school selection to second on your list. It's the North Shore of Long Island, you're not likely to make a mistake with regards to school districts.

I just bought in Huntington and went to the schools here. (I'm also a teacher.)

I would mostly agree with Victorny; however, S. Huntington and Huntington are not the same.

Huntington takes a lot of the lower income kids from Huntington Station and has seriously degreded in recent years. Gangs have even infiltrated the school. I have a few teacher friends who left the district in recent years.

S. Huntington also takes some of the Station kids, but it's a really different district. On the upswing and looking to be considered one of the typical "Huntington" and "Nassau" schools. In recent years, they've added activities and courses that look to add value to the district. If anything, it's a district that you can get in on "the ground floor" so to speak.
