I don't know the whole situation so I cannot defend it or condemn it.

My opinion is that if not done to excess, there is no harm. All of your questions would be answered best by someone at the school. You are quick to throw this teacher under the bus for playing one movie.

Yup. An over reaction, IMO.

Hmmm. I guess you haven't seen a college catalog lately. I can almost guarantee there are many communications/media/marketing and even business courses that focus heavily on Disney's entertainment empire. Maybe little Timmy will ace that course thanks to that 3rd grade teacher.

...Some other TV inspired collegiate courses (I am not making this up):

"Philosophy and Star Trek" at Georgetown (a not too shabby school),
"Arguing with Judge Judy" or "Simpsons and Philosophy" at U Cal Berkeley,
or my personal favorite (sorry, not TV related) "Cyberporn and Society" at none other than our own SUNY Buffalo! I'd be happy just to get the workbook to that one.

What was the teacher doing while the movie was being watched by the children? If she was watching the movie herself, texting friends, or some other personal activity, you have a very good point. However, if she was grading tests, preparing lessons, or one of the many other activities that teachers normally do on their own time, it may be understandable. Teachers in that district are currently working without a contract, so they may be less inclined to donate their personal time to work related matters.

I have been reading thru this (and other posts in other forums) and am astonished at the level of disrepect shown to teachers.

Why all the animosity towards teacher who, if they're lucky, may earn - oh my gosh - $70,000 a year? Why shouldn't a teacher earn a living wage? Remember, these are the people we are entrusting our kid's minds to Yes, they are lucky enough to work in a profession that allows them to work 180 days/year - and yes, the school day is 6-8 hours long. But does anyone of us who is NOT a teacher have any idea what a teacher does outside of the classroom in prep work, correcting papers, keeping up with continuing education requirements etc?

Does anyone complain about the firefighter or policeman who probably makes double per hour what a teacher makes? Paid for with your taxpayer dollars. Yes, I know they are brave but is anyone complaining about their 'downtime' when they're not out on a call or when they're just 'riding around' in their squad cards (yes, I'm being sarcastic). Where's the outrage about Wall Street traders who are collectively garnering over $100 BILLION in bonuses this year? For what, creating financial products that no one understood which have led to the biggest fiscal crisis we've seen since the 1920s?

Of course, there are bad teachers - just like there are bad police, nurses, doctors, managers, booksellers, etc. But let's not lump them all together and collectively say they are overpaid and only work 180 days per year.

If anyone has a question or a problem about what is going on in the classroom why not do the sensible thing and address it with teacher. And instead of constantly criticizing maybe we should all think about we can do as parents to help the situaiton in our schools -- in all the criticisms of education that are floating around very few seem to be leveled at the parents and what we do -- or don't do -- at home to reinforce what is being learned in the classroom.

I have a lot bigger problem with cops who sit around in parking lots talking to each other instead of patrolling the streets than I do with a teacher who occasionally rewards a class who is performing well by showing them a movie.

My point was that teaching schools, ed. programs don't train teachers to show Disney films in school. Besides, it's probably a violation of fair use rules.

I never argued that teachers shouldn't be paid well. I'm known in this forum for backing teacher pay, and raises - for the most part. I've been accused of having a closet teacher for a spouse, and even being a teacher myself! (Gasp!). The reason we moved to Long Island was because of the quality of the schools. I'm happy with the quality of the schools, relatively.

I have listed problems here with police, also. I explained that drug dealers were operating across the street from my house and I named the Sargeant who never did anything about it. I've explained to others how to have these problems addressed.

I don't think the only way to address a problem is to go to the teacher. My neighbor went to the teacher. She's going to the principal. She recently attended the PTA meeting. But I also believe in journalists being watch-dogs. I merely questioned the pedagogical soundness of showing 90 minute cartoons in class. I argued that situating TV as a reward for good work suggests that good word isn't the norm, that learning isn't fun and engaging, and reinforces the idea that kids want to watch television. I think it is a harmful, and I have no problem making the specific school responsible for allowing it in this quasi-journalistic forum.

I say, remove this teacher and bring someone else in and pay him/her more.

Have you ever seen the cops in Wyandanch??? One of the most crime-ridden areas of LI and the cops have their cars parked behind the fire house for hours while they're inside. Or they park and BS on Mount/Straight Path.

I definitely have a problem with this. These uneducated cretins are making upwards of 100K and are doing NOTHING but sitting around, shooting the breeze, or hanging out in the fire house.

Not that they don't take breaks, but keep this in mind : most suffolk cops, like nassau cops, relieve each other on post and use the vollie house as the switching area. If a car goes unfilled due to manpower issues, it will never leave the parking lot until the next tour that has enough manpower to fill it.
