My daughter is considering going to a private HS beyond 15 miles from our school district. We were hoping they would at least pick up a % of the cost. Has anyone been successful in getting their long island school district to pay for busing beyond the 15 mile limit?

Call your district and find out. See what they have to say about it and take it from there. Or pick a closer school. What district are you located in and which school is your child looking to attend?

Was faced with that a while back and was NOT successful
But there's no reason YOU shouldn't try - maybe your SD is more flexible, although with all the funding cutbacks, I wouldn't hold my breath...

Good luck!

Transportation issues are governed by state law. Don't count on your district changing just for your special snowflake. In this economic climate, it's highly unlikely.

Longwood has often tried to change it but is always unsuccessful. Its amazing that some school districts will bus to 25 mile limit while others will only do 15 miles. That limits us to one parochial high school.

It costs an additional $3000 per child per year to the parents to get busing to a school outside the limit. There is no break for a second child either. So for me if my children were going to go to a high school outside the 15 mile limit, it would cost an additional $6000 per year just for transportation.

Thanks to all for your responses. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem hopeful. We did call the district and have not heard back yet. Just thought that since they would pick up the tab for up to 15 miles, they would pick up that percent of the bill. Doesn't seem so unreasonable.

What about public transportation?
I know in my old district a bunch of kids would take the bus and/or train from queens and other outside districts to school every morning.

Kids in my district have to take the train to Mineola to get to Chaminade.

Transportation costs way too much. You can't expect districts to pick up every cost for every parent! Taxes would really be through the roof if they did that!

Some districts just unfortunately are located too far away from most private/parochials. Hey, even the kids who live in the district and go to district schools, but live TOO CLOSE to the school, don't get busing!

^^^ Yes, I think the OP would be surprised how much it costs to run one school bus...and all for the benefit of one or two students? Hence the 15 mile law.

I used to work in Mineola and we'd see the Chaminade boys getting off the train every morning and walking to the school. DIdn't seem to kill them.

I wouldn't give up after having no return call - the school district policy has to be written down somewhere. Where we live, if you go to public HS you hvae to live over 2 miles away to get a bus -- if you go to private school you can apply and receive a subsidy to help pay your transportation costs....up to a certain limit (I think it's $700).

They're not too anxious to send out the check so you may have to be persistent.
