Living in Melville/Dix Hills
I currently live in Halesite/Huntington. My wife and I love it but it is time to move from our house into a larger house with bigger property and better schools for our kids. We really wanted to go to Greenlawn or Centerport for the Harborfields district but also looked at Elwood and E. Northport. Houses either were great with lousy property or great property that needed to be gutted or just too damn expensive. Our realtor said why not Dix Hills. the HHH district is great. Bigger properties. Taxes aren't horrible. We were told for commuting to try and staqy north of the LIE and if possible NSP. However we haven't seen much there either that fits our criteria. Looking further south we are starting to see some stuff at least on the web. One in Melville on W. Hills Place but the HHH district. One in Dix Hills just off of Euclid Ave. How are these neighborhoods? We were attracted to Halesite because it was middle class, mostly Christian and very safe. The Melville home is closer to Wyandanch which my brother said DO NOT commute from there on the LIRR. The Dix Hills house is about 10 minutes from the Deer Park station. I thought it was a good station but in this forum people have said it is not. Time wise to the city it is as good if not better than Huntington but a lot less spots and sounds like first come first serve with little security. I would be leaving no later than 6:30 and probably closer to 6. I would hope I could get a spot.
Any feedback would be great because we have been looking for more than 6 months and it has been stressful. The thought of Dix Hills or the HHH parts or Melville is becoming more appealing but it has to be the right thing to do not only from a nicer house perspective but from a community perspective and commuting perspective. Thanks.

- The Half Hollow Hills School District really is great.
- Melville and Dix Hills aren't really close to Wyandanch, you have Wheatley Heights an entire town (Hamlet) seperating the two and Wheatley Heights is not a bad town.
- As for commuting into the city, I don't know much about the commute times, I think it's about an hour but I would avoid there in the Summer Time, when I went to the Wyandanch train station it was infested with bees! They were everywhere! But idk, that might have been a one-time thing.... As for safety, I wouldn't worry about it, during Rush Hour there are many many other people just like you commuting to work and you will not stand out and be a target. Personally I would be concerned about parking my car there..

i grew up in dix hills and now live in melville with my family. the area on w. hills place is very close to wyandanch and not considered a great area-i dont know if you got there by going down bagetelle road-
it is not true to look north of northern state-as far as looking north of expressway-that is kind of old as well. there is a beautiful area called strathmore which is off of burrs lane-that is south of expressway-
i dont know your price range so cant help you more specifically-
as far as mostly christian-no dix hills/melville is not mostly christian-i dont think-seems a bit of everything-

Also, for the record, I doubt that this matters, but properties on West Hills Place happen to be apart of the tiny portion of Dix Hills that have a"Dix Hills, 11798" mailing address, so you would have to use the Wheatley Heights post office or the brand new Bullet Proof Wyandanch Post Office.

We looked at HHH school district also... but the ones in our price range were near Straight Path in Dix Hills and that was less desirable. Nothing north of the LIE really. For those prices, we'd rather stay westward in Nassau.
As for the train though, my wife takes the Ronkonkoma line which that should be... she gets off at Bethpage and the commuters on the train are normal well-behaved citizens. If someone is telling you not to use a specific station, it's because of crime local to those lots... which I don't believe there's a lot of anyway... unless you're talking about car break-ins, etc. There are sprinklings of that.

According to the Census Bureau's online address search function, West Hills Place is in Dix Hills ("Melville, NY 11747" mailing address).
A map of the Hamlet of Dix Hills in the Town of Huntington, Suffolk County:
The Hamlet of Dix Hills has a different border than does the "Dix Hills, NY 11746" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Dix Hills, NY 11746" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Dix Hills and a place can have other than a "Dix Hills, NY 11746" mailing address and be in the Hamlet of Dix Hills): places that have a "Dix Hills, NY 11746" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Dix Hills are in the Hamlet of Huntington Station, the Hamlet of Elwood, the Hamlet of Commack, and the Hamlet of Melville; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Dix Hills that have a "Wyandanch, NY 11798", "Brentwood, NY 11717", "Huntington, NY 11743" and "Melville, NY 11747" mailing address.

I'd stay away from anything remotely close to Wheatley Heights or Wyandanch. You be better off doubling back through Elwood and East Northport.

Its really amazing how some people try and put Wyandanch and Wheatley Heights into the same category. Really quite silly.

Why do you think the OP should avoid Wheatley Heights?
