We Need "Speed Cameras" On All Highways!
I'm tired of all the irresponsible drivers that go way beyond the speed limit on our highways. They endanger innocent people and seldom get caught. The State Police, Nassau PD & Suffolk Sherrifs do not have the resources to adequately deal with speeders.
So...I propose numerous speed cameras on all highways (Similar to red light cameras) with locations and speed settings kept secret. Fine should be set at around $50.00 per each mph over the legal limit.
Benefits:
*Our highways will become safer
*Police can concentrate on other safety issues DWI, Reckless driving etc
*Funds raised should be dedicated solely to fund Highway safety improvements
Let me know what everyone thinks. I'll be writing Gov elect Cuomo with my idea.

I don't have an issue with them in general, but the LIE and Sunrise Highway where it is limited access should not have 55 MPH speed limits anymore. Similar highways in other states have 60-65 MPH limits, and these should as well.
That being said, I'm not opposed to them.

I agree with this proposal. I would even go further and require that anyone using major highways in this state be required to have EZ Pass and that be linked to a traffic monitoring system. You speed, EZ pass picks it up, and you get a ticket. Perfect revenue enhancement and saving CHILDREN'S lives too (always say its for the children).
Seriously though, I remember going on a business trip years ago to Georgia. I was visiting a client location and called ahead to ask directions. I can remember this one client, in a perfect southern red-neck drawl, say..." I don't know how you Neewwww Yerkers drive, but down here in Georgia we obey the 55 mph speed limit". Sure enough on the highways, no one, not even the 18 wheelers, were going over 55. Somehow we all managed to get where we were going in a reasonable amount of time.
Certainly, at the distances most of us on Long Island travel, there is little or no need to go above 55.

Actually many European countries use cameras to enforce speed limits and offenses like tailgaiting. Why you think it would "never" work, I have no idea, but it can and does work. You can't, of course, enforce points and such because you don't know who is driving, but in terms of actually making people obey speed limits, cameras work much better than random police speed traps, and they cost much less.

You obviously do not commute via car to your job. When you are snarled in traffic that causes you 20+ minute delays, there is a need to make up for lost time and go above the artifically imposed/low limit of 55. Most of the stretches of our highways were designed for speeds of about 65-75 - which just happens to be the real speed limit during rush hour when the roads open up.

I think what you're thinking this is, is more of a bandaid on a bigger problem.
Most Long Islanders cannot drive properly, efficiently and most of all SAFELY.

How much time or distance do you really think you are going to make up by increasing your speed. You are doing nothing but increasing the chance that you will get into a serious accident. The extra 10-20 mph is not going to significantly cut down your driving time over the usual relatively short distances we travel on Long Island.

You aren't talking simple cameras like the ones at intersections for people who blow red lights. You are talking way more advanced camera systems. This equals big money and then you will be the same fool complaining that your taxes went up...again.
