Ehh, I went to Mepham and I didn't think ti was a terrible school. granted I graduated in 98, but the major bad marks on mepham as of late was the football team.

South of merrick mixed bag. Yeah, there are some nice houses, but there are plenty of shacks on the water that are run down and a pleathora of homes build and stuck in the 70s and 80s, although not all.

Each town has "nice areas". Some have more prevalent "not as nice" spots.
My view, in descending order:
Wantagh
Seaford
Merrick
Bellmore
...but in the vicinity, Massapequa over any of these 4 towns

For those who may not be familiar with Massapequa:

Massapequa is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the south part of the Town of Oyster Bay, in the southeast part of Nassau County, along the Oyster Bay/Hempstead town line.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Massapequa in the Town of Oyster Bay is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of North Massapequa; on the east by the Village of Massapequa Park; on the south by South Oyster Bay; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Seaford in the Town of Hempstead (the Oyster Bay/Hempstead town line).

Massapequa is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where the majority of the places with the community name as part of their mailing address are not in the hamlet: places that have a "Massapequa, NY 11758" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Massapequa are in the Hamlet of North Massapequa and the Hamlet of East Massapequa.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

Seaford and Wantagh very similar-good schools, community spirit, etc. Bellemore-I would stay away from-alot of punk kids-problems at High schools. North Bellemore in particular has gotten very seedy. I live in Wantagh-it is alot nicer, schools are good, etc. same can be said for Seaford.

Problem with Massapequa is the High school-way overcrowded, the ninth grade is an annex that was added to an elementary school. Over crowded classes as well-my friend moved there 2 years ago, her daughter had 36 kids in one class-like the city!! That is ridiculous-too close to mall and Suffolk border as well.

IMO,
I would pick Wantagh and then Merrick before Bellmore or Seaford. Good Luck!
