Hi, I have a dilemma. We currently live in Little Neck Queens & looking to buy a house in Nassau county LI (Old Bethpage-Plainiew or Jericho SD) this spring/summer. My daughter, who was born in late December, will be graduating from Kindergarten from a NYC public school this summer. Once we move to long island, she will be eligible to attend 1st grade in the LI school by virtue of having completed Kindergarten at a NYC public school but going by her Date of Birth, she would be eligible to attend Kindergarten at the Long Island. Academically, my daughter has been average in Kindergarten. Once we move to LI, should we have her bumped to 1st grade or hold her back in Kindergarten? What would you do?

If she's average in K, and not struggling (either academically or socially), it seems like she should go on to first grade. (If she's struggling/getting picked on for being young or small/etc., I' give a different answer, but you said average, so I'm taking you at your word).

Personally, I'd be more concerned about the damage I'd do by making her appear/feel "stupid" by creating the impression that she needed to be held back, and less concerned about trying to turn her into some kind of academic rockstar by playing the system (and I think studies have shown that the benefits of being oldest vs. youngest in a particular grade dissipate by the middle of elementary school, so whatever nominal advantage she'd be getting by being the oldest kindergartener instead of the youngest first grader would only affect her very earliest years anyway).

curious - what level is she reading at? By end of K, she should be at level C at a minimum (at least that's what Plainview tells us). Jericho is typically one of the most competitive districts so you'll have to weigh that in as well.

In some areas of the country like CT, it's popular to hold kids back, but that's not usually the case here.

How old is your daughter? If she is graduating kindergarten this summer then I assume that she turned 6 this past December, correct?

^ believe it should be 5 since kids finishing K this June would not be 6 yet if they're late in the year.

Geez...all these parents who want their little snowflake to be a genius in kindergarten.

When I went to Kindergarten it was fun, games, songs, fingerpainting etc......

We were allowed to be kids and enjoy ourselves without helicopter parents pushing us to be the next Einstein.

and it didnt make me stoopid or anyding like that...I even learned to use the interwebs and stuff like that.

^ oy vey.

Excuse us if the opposite half of the grandpas on LI are parents of school-age kids living our normal lives paying exorbitant prices for a purpose.

What do you think Kindergarten is now if you don't think they do what you describe anymore? Instead of discussing academic progress, maybe we should also take the time to discuss the school bus he drew today.

If she's late December then most likely she didn't start at 5. On her 5th birthday she already past the December 1st deadline...but just want to be sure about the OP's daughter's age before I respond.

If the child already completed kindergarten then she should be able to go into 1st grade in September on LI. She'll be older because she's had to start later. I wouldn't keep her back to do kindergarten again. If she can read on her own and write then she should be fine

I would ask her teacher about her writing and her ability to attend to the lessons. I am a TA in a kindy classroom and even the smartest kids have trouble sitting still all day as there is NO downtime - none. It's really ridiculous. If she is reading at a C level she should be OK there. Make sure she knows all her sight words too.

Honestly since you have the year under your belt it's your call as you know her best. I wouldn't advise someone to send a younger kindy kid ahead these days because kindy is SO academic - even moreso than when my 10 year old started school. But since your child is already there you go with your gut.

We have a couple of struggling kids in our class but the problem with holding back a kid in kindy is the first few weeks of school is going over really simple, basic stuff that would have her bored out of her mind in all likelihood. Keep that in mind.

Be aware that if you get special ed services they probably won't let you hold her back (even something like speech).
