Try the traffic in Florida. The LIE is nothing compared to some of that mess. to many people not enough or big enough roads. Takes my cousin 1 hour to do a 10 min drive in cape coral around rush hour. The rest of the day is no picnic either.

In all honesty if the LIRR wasn't so expensive, if property taxes were lower, if the SALES tax was lower and housing prices were lower, I'd eventually buy a house on LI and move out there...realistically, that will not happen because I'd have to move out past Mastic in order to afford my own home and I work in downtown Manhattan!

You get what you pay for I guess. I have been to states that have cheap taxes and if you look half the roads are dirt no street lights no civilization now that is nice on vacation but if I need a hospital I dont want to travel 2 hours.Or how about a gallon of milk for that matter.I like those people that move there and say isnt it beautifull and clean? Well yea its beautifull but who is gonna litter anyway the cows?

it is comeing down I found some properties in east moriches and east port under 400. Eastport walk to water 369000. 4grand taxes not really that bad nice property 3bd 2 bth million dollar houses on the street, also nice old farm house same street. They are out there just have to look.east moriches 2 with beach and boating rights 4 and under but the taxes are higher in east moriches then eastport, Eastport is southhampton town. I guess it is what you consider affordable pretty sad when you think of 400,000. as affordable I guess.LOL

Spartan's experience of Long Island was exactly the same as mine and he is spot-on right about everything.
I lived there for about 4 years and now live in Connecticut. I have lived in NYC for 17 years and grew up in N.C. Out of all the places I have lived Long Island is by far the worst. There are people who grew up there and have family going back generations. They love it there. But Long Island is a very strange place and not to everybody's taste.
People are aggressive and rude. There is a large Hispanic population. LIE is crowded and dangerous with aggressive drivers. Prices are high.
The only thing I liked at all about living there was shopping for groceries at Fairway and Trader Joes.

My wife and I grew up on LI, moved across the country several times, winding up now in Raleigh, NC.
While I do agree that we lack good transportation and streetlights, NC does have some very good medical facilities (like Duke) and shopping. Even Saks Fifth Ave has arrived here.
What I miss is the boardwalk and beach at Long Beach as well as the older buildings that give my hometown, Oceanside, a sense of permanence.
When we lived on the island, Nassau was affordable for middle class folks. My dad was a cabbie in NYC and mom was a legal secretary in Cedarhurst.
Sounds like LI has followed NYC into an area for the wealthy.
It's a shame that my kids couldn't have the opportunity I had to live on LI.
Best to all from Raleigh, NC.

Fairway is a great market. There are bargains there, if you look.
Sometimes, they make too many cooked chickens, and right before closing, start selling them two for the price of one.
