I would move to Southeast Florida, preferably Boca Raton or Highland Beach. I prefer SE Florida for cleaner and nicer beaches, friendlier people (my experience), less pollution, better weather, and a more relaxed way of life. In addition, Boca and the surrounding areas have a great selection of shops and restaurants. I can't wait to move to SE FL!

Portland Or Seattle. Its rainyer there and I've been told they don't have "hot, hazy, humid" summers-which i hate here on LI. they may not be cheap either, but they are both less than LI
Let's face it, taxes here will always be out of control. There's a $250K house near me, a cottage, $9.5K taxes. My parents' home that went for $600K didn't have taxes like that.
So where would you go, to save $$?
Your question is too broad it has to include what you want,Job?retirement?climate?health care and many other factors.I am retired with no kids in house so I am looking at coastal north/east North Carolina like Greenville area for low Taxes, cheaper house,a bit warmer climate, good VA Health care.Only problem is getting my equity out of my house in North Shore Huntington area.JMO
I thought of Key West years ago, but didn't pursue it for the same reason I didn't pursue Greenport, LI. If you can't find something, say a great pizza, health specialist, used book store, you have to travel. You're limited because you live on an island. I knew someone who lived in the Keys, it took three days for a part to arrive for his car, as everything has to be brought in. A short distance from me is an emergency pet hospital, which probably saved my younger cat's life one Sunday. If I lived somewhere where there wasn't one anywhere near me, we both would've been stuck.

I did not take a job in Key West for these exact reasons. Once the kids are grown and up not at home we'll probably reconsider it though...it's on our short list.

I was under the impression that Southwestern Florida was nicer in terms of the beaches, people, amenities and what not? Areas like Clearwater, Naples, Tampa, etc.....
Though I know most of my friends relative all live in the east coast....
