I knew someone who lived in the Keys, it took three days for a part to arrive for his car, as everything has to be brought in. A short distance from me is an emergency pet hospital, which probably saved my younger cat's life one Sunday. If I lived somewhere where there wasn't one anywhere near me, we both would've been stuck.
Or great auto mechanic, or library, or airport, or whatever is vital to you. It's tempting to minimize the importance of things sometimes when you're trying to do a column-by-column comparison of advantages and disadvantages. But those "small" items can end up moving to the top of the list. I have to keep reminding myself to take them seriously.

That's what's so great about City-Data. You hear all sides of everything, and you can put yourself in other people's shoes and make a better-informed decision. Or not! But hey, at least you've been warned.

I've only lived elsewhere because of school or travel. But honestly I have everything I need here in close proximity. There is no motivating factor to GTFO other than expenses. There are some younger people who feel these burbs aren't for them since this is the only place they've ever known and it's boring (grass is greener), but those are few and far between. You may be one of them, I don't know. Anyway, why are you surprised? It's not like this is northeastern Montana.

real estate agent coming to look at house next month. As I stated before, we moved from L.I. to CT several years ago, and was noticeably cheaper then. Not so anymore, still not long Island expensive but getting up there. Delaware next most likely. Still close enough to go visit family in Long Island, but much cheaper than both CT and NY. Now to find a job there.

Back to L.I. not in cards for us I doubt. Every time I go back I curse at traffic on the cross island/Southern State, even off the highways traffic is absurd. Taxes? What the heck, $10k for an average size house in some neighborhoods? My parents have a small ranch in Massapequa $800 a month taxes. That's crazy.

Long Island does have positives, beaches, fishing, great food, proximity to city, etc etc, but more negatives than positive. Whenever we go back it is bittersweet, miss certain things but happy as well once we drive back over whitestone bridge and get up north of the bronx and traffic magically disappears.

For the references to NC... Not a big fan of lists, but I dug this up for entertainment purposes.

And that, my friends, is the absolute truth. The 405 and the 101 at Rush Hour (a misnomer if there ever was one) will put hair on your chest. It ain't for sissies.
