A hip roof distributes the snow load among 4 surfaces thus reducing the load. A very steep gable slope (tudor style) have little surface area to build a snow load (angle of roof is greated than the angle of repose).

Valleys are a big concern. Your really can't properly "repair" a valley without removing shingles. You really need to "replace" a valley. Most roofers do not know how to flash valleys or penetrations which is the cause of 90% of all roof leaks. Most use alum. flashing since copper is so expensive. Bad roofers love to use roofing cement....ugh! Band aid at best...if anyone want to "Repair" your roof and has a caulk gun and/or a 5 gallon pail of flashing cement.....send them packing!

If your gutter is full of ice which it most likely is after all the storms much of the water will dam up putting more weight on the roof.I have seen roof structures crack 100 miles north of the Bronx in the Catskills its not something to ignore.JMO

saw quite a few houses where the gutters were ripped off/hanging due to the weight of the ice

That is an aluminum awning that collapsed, not a roof.

Great...now Snoozeday is advocating Long Islanders climbing onto their roof. The population is about to take a dramatic dip downward as Darwinism gets to work.
