Actually, arguably, there is a greater supply of national news, but not much local news coverage... which is why NYT remains free and Newsday does not.

regional newspapers are laying off workers and losing tons of money nationwide. The Dolans are clowns but giving your product away for free in this case clearly isn't a sustainable business model. It's only a matter of time before paywalls or some other method for collecting revenue is the norm.

The NYT tried this years ago and abandoned it. It just looks like money grab from the dolans

not a fair comparison. I would imagine the NYT (which is essentially a national paper) can genereate a lot more revenue via advertising then a regional paper.

Newsday.com, by closing off their viewership will generate more revenue? sorry the consumers of their .com is pretty static. They already subscribe to a product of theirs. So in the process they have lost traffic to their site and in turn lost advertisers as well.

again, the traffic gained by giving away content is not enought to sustain the business.

Don't subscribe and it will be free again shortly. There are plenty of sites out there that offer free LI News. Here are a few:

Patch

Long Island News from the Long Island Press

AntonNews.com

www.news12.com

Fox Long Island News

and of course the post and nytimes have LI sections.

based on what I've seen so far Patch is garbage. The Herald does a solid job by me. The Long Island press has the occasional interesting feature, but it's like 50% ads and lacks depth.
